Need sling recommendations for an AR

Folks,

I recently got a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 Sport. I'm generally trying to keep it stock, but I have to carry it somehow!

My primary use will be A) Plinking, B) Hunting for food if needed, and whacking the occasional coyote, C) Community defense (if ever needed).

I has the 1" stock sling loops.

What's my best 'low dollar' solution for a sling?

Is it recommended to invest in some aftermarket sling mounts?

For a good all around sling I really love the Viking VTAC. I like single point slings for a lot of my AR applications, but the two point is without a doubt the most versatile sling configuration and among two points the VTAC is one of the best IMO.

Pretty hard to beat a plain old GI issue canvas sling...

For all of the functionality of the VTAC or Blue Force Vickers at half the price, you should check out the Way of the Gun Gunsling... SF designed, American made, and they require no hardware to mount.

I have one of the Bushido Tactical slings that Wade Rorich personally made for me when I was in Orlando. It is pretty nice and I would not feel under equipped with it if I were to use it on my rifle overseas.

http://dsgarms.com/ProductInfo/BSTBTSL-HKMULTI-BLK.aspx

Pair it with the single point sling plate or bolt on adapter of your choice and you can go from two point sling to single point quickly and easily giving you the best of all worlds and something you can set up for your specific purpose at the moment.

Here is a video from Busido Tactical at SHOT Show featuring the sling: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...4bh4I6w#t=192s

either vickers or Vtac are good ones or an SOE gear single point if you want to go that way

I was going to recommend the Magpul MS3, but then I realized you said low dollar.

+1 what Skadoosh said- for the guy not into 3-gun, running-n-gunning, saving small third world countries- the plain old GI sling is fine. The one Skadoosh pictured is great, and the regular black silent GI sling will last as long as you will.

Good grief, not everybody who gets an AR has to rig up like they'll wake up in the sand box tomorrow morning.

Yup.

The USGI sling is way more versatile than most people realize.

Looks like some people missed your "low cost" requirement. I'm going to get an old GI sling. Right now, I have an old strap that I pulled from a laptop case. It's worked fine...

As for aftermarket sling attachments, if you are going to leave it on, you should be fine with the sling attachments you have. If you are looking for something that is easy to pull on and off, you might consider some quick disconnects.

I hate to sound resistant to learning, but I've spent enough time practicing a "bladed" stance with a two-point sling that the new slings and methods that seem optimised for room clearing are uncomfortable and unnatural.

Zuk, that's why you are supposed to practice the new way. Then it will become natural.

By the time I learn that, it won't be current either.

I put a single point sling on my AR... I have tried to get use to it, I really have. But I think I am going to replace it with a traditional 2-point sling. I just can't get use to having the weapon dangling around in front of me, and I miss the shooting aid that comes from a 2-point sling.

USGI Sling.... the best?

SKadoosh, I'm liking the simplicity and cost of the GI sling idea. To my original post, I just need a way to get a 'handle' on the gun. In fact, after looking at a all of the very good recommendations (thanks to all posters), I'm thinking simpler is better - for me.
So, on my day off tomorrow, I may be going to some rock climbing shops and Mil Surps to see about some webbing and sliders, snap buckles, etc. As an old technical rock climber, I've worked with webbing and slings so I might be able to figure something suitable. I think I can make what I need for $5-10. If it turns out good, I'll post pics.

I've made my fair share of slings on the cheap with materials available at my local Ace Hardware as have many others. That might be a decent place to start looking for materials.

^^^ Just saw your post after a quick edit on my last comment. Yup, I'll check ACE, too. Good store for that sort of thing.

A few years back a guy on AR15.com posted an instructional on how to make a 3-point sling on your own. It's not my preferred sling type, but if you're interested then the information can be found here.

The USGI sling has a detachable loop that clips on the buttstock end of the rifle...this is a very handy design feature that I don't think you'll find at Ace Hardware store. You should be able to find these slings at any army/navy surplus store for ten bucks or so.

Magpul Sling for AR

In my experience, Magpul makes a fantastic sling. It's not really expensive, they run for about 40-45 bucks, but they aren't exactly low dollar. You're better off spending an extra few bucks to get a sling that will last you for a long time.
