Foxfire, it sounds like you're describing the Colt Lightning Slide Action, Small Frame rifle. The Small Frame Lightning was made from 1887-1904 with a serial number range of 1-89912. It was chambered in .22 Short & Long with a 24" barrel(round or octagonal) with a blued finish, half-length magazine and a casehardened hammer. The straight stock and forearm were walnut with an oil finish and could be plain or checkered. The Lightning Small Frame was very well made and today in the condition you've described it could be worth about $1,250. Hope this helps!

Steve,

Thanks for your prompt reply.
I'm going to pass this on to my dad, who, I'm sure, will be pleasantly surprised.
I know I am!

Thanks again...
