My New (Old) Snubby

My step father knows that I'm into guns so he gave me this:

I looked up the serial number on Colt's website and it's a 1940 Detective Special .38 cal 1st issue. I thought this was kind of strange since the site said that Colt switched to round butts in 1934. After some more research I found out that Colt did make limited numbers of revolvers with square butts into the 1940's.

It has a little wear from holster use but I think it is a fine looking gun. It locks up tight and passes the operational checks.

Even though he said I could have it outright, I want to give him a fair price for it. Now I'm no expert on older Colt's and was wondering if someone could give me a ballpark figure. How do you estimate the amount of blueing. There is slight holster wear but for the most part it looks very good. A couple of collector sites said that the 1st series with square butts were worth 20% more than the round butt versions. Any help would be appreciated.

All in all I think it is a nice piece.

No claim to be an "expert", but I would pay 5-600 for one of these.

I'd say that $500 to $600 is about right for one in that condition.
