Why on earth would you want to put your thumb into the BCG? You can exert more force with the forward assist....and not get covered in crud while doing it.

Because there are some here who are determined to show us that they dont need the forward assist no matter what...in spite the fact that it adds virtually no weight to the rifle.

Realistically, as to the "need" for a forward assist and/or the dust cover, no and no for your intended purposes. For me, even though my intended uses mirror yours, yes and yes, but only mostly because any AR-15 rifle just doesn't look right to me without them (a patently indefensible reason in terms of an objective point of view ) and partially because these two features do offer some potential merit in extreme circumstances; they don't add that much weight to the rifle and they really don't cost that much more than one without them.
The biggest advantage to a chromed barrel imo is that they can be easier to clean.

Neither are needed for most range plinking bla bla bla . I'm of the thought why not have them . They do nothing to hurt your ability to use the gun and in some cases could really help . It's kinda like those guys that say having night sights on a pistol is a waist . I will not get in to all the reasons why it would not be necessary . If it,s not hurting your day today use of the gun why not have them for that off chance you need them . You never really know when your going to need these types of things . If you did you would avoid that situation in the first place therefore you would not need them .
