Front sight for a CVA Hawken(St Louis)
I recently came into pocession of a GPR that was blown up with smokeless powder. The only part I am interested in is the rear sight, it is a Lyman 57SML I will have to inlet the stock at the wrist to mount it but that is not my concern,I need some info on what front sight I will need to be in line with the new rear sight. The distance between the front and rear sight is 28 inches.Any info will be greatly appreciated ELMOUSMC

Lyman usually sells the Model 17 sight with the 57 SMJ. The 17 comes in three different heights, .404, .494 & .584, and with eight different dot inserts. It fits a 3/8 dovetail. You'll need to do some measuring with the SMJ installed to decide which height to order.

Hawg: The stock is splintered from the bolster to where the ram rod fits and the lock is bent almost in half the triggers are missing and the trigger guard has a 90 degree bend in it forward. As the story goes someone told the owner that if you kept the charges light you could use smokeless powder. He figured light would be a half load so he poured 50 grains of 4895 down the spout and now I own the results. Except for a small burn on the web of his right hand he was uninjured the rifle took the beating. As near as I can see he was 1 very lucky guyELMOUSMC

Mykeal: Can you give me an Idea where I measure from. The forward dove tail or the barrel flat and how do I determine the height that I will need? thanks ELMOUSMC

I believe Lyman's height numbers are distance from the bottom of the dovetail to the center of the sight dot. That will tell you how far above the barrel flat the sight dot sits. With that, you can determine how far above the barrel flat your rear sight should put the front sight dot.
However, a phone call to Lyman customer service to confirm that would be in order: 800-225-9626. They're open 9-4:30 EST M-F. |
