barnes maximum range x bullets
Just read an article in Buckmasters. I think they only make them in .308 right now but I see .270 and others are on the way.
Midway lists them as "coming soon" for almost a dollar a peice Has anyone out their tried these? Can they possibly be worth the money? http://www.barnesbullets.com/prodmrx_new2006.php |

I like the technology. It is a step-up from solid copper that has length issues and subsequent case volume restrictions. But will they shoot? I haven't found a Barnes bullet that will. At a dollar per round, experimentation will get very pricey.

There are a number of people who've experimented with the tungsten bullets. It seems to me that several years ago Precision Shooting had articles on some tungsten rounds that were .30 cal and maybe 240 grains, but the size of a standard 175 grain match bullet? They did what you would expect. They had great ballistic coefficients for their external size because of their high sectional density, stabilized at a slower twist rate than a lead core bullet the same weight requires, and left more room for powder in the case than a lead core bullet of the same weight would do at standard OAL. Just a huge cost drawback.
By the way, Speer makes a .458 tungsten bullet that Garrett loads in their high pressure Marlin 45-70 rounds. $180 for 20 loaded rounds, if I recall correctly? They call it the Exiter, presumably because it goes clear through about anything. That high sectional density again. Nick
