The development of subcompacts

Would you give more credence to the idea that the development of the mini Glocks, the Kahrs, Kel-Tecs, Beretta Cougars, etc. was caused by the magazine ban or the carry laws that have come to pass in the recent years? Do you think these models would have been developed if there had been no mag ban? Or if carry laws had remained stagnant? Or was the design of chopped grip pistols inevitable?

Please do not read in to this post that I support the mag ban because it may have helped spark these fine designs. It is a stupid law that accomplishes nothing. I am just a fan of alternative history and enjoy "what if".

Hmmm...

Quite likely, as "necessity is the mother of invention".

Had it not been for the ban, we would have been stuck with the PPK and clones, and the derringers that were designed around marginal calibers...

im gonna go with new_comer on this as i remeber before the mag ban in 94 people around here would hardly even look at a gun unless it held 13 rounds or more and most of the people i know told me that i didnt want a glock" the grip swells when you put the clip in " theyed say and now i carry a compact glock more than anything except maybe a keltec p11

I believe part of the reason is the ban. There are actually makers who wouldnt ship in the fullsized version if they couldnt import 'real mags" with it and shrunk the gun as a result.
But I also believe that with concealed carry, being on the roll its been on for a while..the demand for "tiny guns" would have been seen without the ban....Im not saying it would be this strong..but IMO, would be there none the less.
Shoot well

I don't know how much, if any, influence the ban had on it. The Smith 3913 was pre-ban and hugely successful. George Kelgren (Keltec) was experimenting with small higher powered handguns for years. I would bet Justin Moon's vision for his company was pre-ban. We we're clamoring for them. Once one gets out there and is well received everyone wants to build one.

I have to agree with Ed2

I think that the gun manufactures were already going in that direction. I do think that the magazine capacity ban, and conceal carry laws may have pushed them to come out with the subcompacts sooner than they would of otherwise. I think there was already a market for the subcompact guns before the capacity ban.
