Remington Model 14 in 25 Rem w Stevens Scope

I have a Model 14 in .25 Rem. I am trying to determine the year of manufacture. It has a "C" serial number 154XX. The rifle is in good shape, I would guess around 80% to 90%, has been hunted and well cared for. The action is very smooth and I have yet to do a thorough cleaning. I'm going to try to find some ammo for it.

It has a "J. Stevens Arms" scope of maybe 2x or 3x mounted on dovetail mounts with a graceful spring tensioner on the front ring and external adjustments on the rear ring: really nice and really complements the rifle. The glass and reticle are clear and clean. I have no idea what this scope or scope/rifle combo is worth.

Any info on rifle date of manufacture and anything on the scope would be greatly appreciated. I have pictures if anyone is interested.

The Remington Model 14/14A was made from 1912 thru 1935, and I have potentially good news, and some bad news.

The potentially good news is, if your rifle has the thumbnail saftey, that safety doubles the value of the rifle.

The bad news is that they weren't issued D/T'd for a scope, and doing so devalues one by about half of the value of an undrilled specimen.

Pics would be great, as it sounds like a nice little rifle; and the scope setup sounds like the adjustable mounts that Bausch & Lomb used for their scope in the 1950's & 60's, before Bushnell bought B&L out.

Also, is there any way to narrow down the date of mfgr?

Starting in 1921 Remington put a two or three letter date code on the left rear of the barrel.

Made before that, I don't know; call Remington and ask.

Although the installation of a scope sight will hurt its value in the eyes of collectors, it sounds like a really neat little outfit; the scope is very period considerably predating the B&L PetahW mentioned.

Only sure way to determine a value is to sell it by auction. No appraisal not accompanied by a cash offer means much to me.

Aside from the letter "J" on the left side of the barrel, the 5 digit serial number on the receiver (which has the letter "C" above it) probably places this rifle as fairly early manufacture, certainly before 1921.

Mazzman, I respectfully disagree with your date of manfacture. According to Blue Book, the "C" prefix indicates your rifle was made in 1934. A 90% gun is worth (again, BB) $500, an 80%, $400. This is the plain 14/14A rifle, without considering scope or modifications.
Like Jim said, in the end the cash is all that matters.

Al: I would like to believe you. However!!! If you look on the Remington Society site, they have a list of Remington serial numbers for each model by date of manufacture. It is a badly copied and incomplete list, and for the Model 14, on page #55, the lowest serial number at the top of the page is #95287, with a date of May 16, 1924. Page 56 ends with June 8, 1935, #128934. Unfortunately, there is no page 54!!!

But, if this is correct (and it roughly corresponds with the number range on the Remington Firearms site for the 14/14A: 00001 - 125060; 1913 - 1934), my rifle was made prior to 1924, and since the SN is in the 15000 range (154XX), I am guessing it was made early in the production run.

I do not know what the "C" means. I know they made these in different grades, but mine seems to be a standard grade from appearances, and the Remington site says that the 14C was "Special Grade".

Not much. There is a book on old scopes but I do not have it.

That's right from the factory archives and the copy is as good as it gets of what is there. I put the RSA logo on it in background so if someone wants to swipe it at last they know where it came from.
