Question for Ledbetter or other...

Here's a question for you legal experts out there.

What should one do under the following circumstances?

Someone works in an urban setting, which just so happens to include hospitals and a university. In the past month, there have been robberies, muggings, and even fatal shootings within a few blocks from the employee's building or parking deck, even in well lit conditions. If the person doesn't get out of work (in a university building) until well after dark, and has to walk 3 to 4 blocks to get to the parking deck, there is a good possibility that something could go wrong.

Obviously it is unlawful to bring a gun into the university building, but just outside the building is fair game. There are no boundaries which separate the school from downtown district. I've come to the conclusion that the best solution would be to carry a knife or pepper spray, which is not a good option where shootings are common. I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.

Ps..Keep in mind, there may or may not be cameras on the sides of buildings. The thought came to mind that if the individual carried anyways, and ran into an altercation, ended up shooting someone and had to explain it to the police, there would be the possibility that the person "had gone made it back to his/her vehicle, realized that they had dropped something along the way back, grabbed the firearm from vehicle just in case, and was looking for a lost item en route when the attack occurred." The potential cameras would show the truth.
Also thought about taking the firearm dissassembled in bookbag/purse to work, then assemble and load it on the way out. It's still a gun, but if for some reason there were a search at work, it would not pose the same threat in the workplace that a fully chambered gun would.

This comes from a scenario discussed after all the recent violence in the area. Thanks for any insight or feedback.

I just dont understand a world where if you were being attacked and your life were threatened and you then stopped that threat with a firearm you would be prosecuted. I would rather be alive in front of a jury fighting for what is right than be dead!

My wife works in a healthcare environment as well and she carries. I would rather her be prosecuted for carrying then be dead or raped for not. This is a matter we discussed and it made the most since to us. It may not be the best for everyone but for us it is.

I think that way to much thought is put into what if? I understand that we need to look ahead and plan our actions but if you are dead, it wont matter how thought out it was.

Same thing goes for if I am being strongarmed or someone has a knife on me. I can assure you that I am going to use the biggest weapon I can get to. I am not going to match his fighting abilities or knifefight him. He will meet Mr. G19. If I dont make it through his encounter then it wont matter what I did.

I know you guys do not like to be control crazed freaks but why don't these threads that are basically requesting other people's OK/encouragement/support to break the law get locked as quick as the stupid troll posts do?

To me this is no different than markj's silly post about getting his .45 ready for a 12 year old who mooned him.

Get security to escort you to your car, that's kind of what they are there for if requested. Don't leave the building alone. Don't make yourself a target and show fear. Definitely don't carry a gun illegally to your job and make a mistake out of fear.

This is no attempt to justify any irrational or illegal action by the opinion of another, whether it is from an expert or an idiot. As stated, it was just a request for insight or feedback, which is what the forum offers. Doesn't mean I or anyone I know will be doing any of the above, nor should anyone trust anonymous legal advice here or anywhere else.

The point is, if alternate transportation is not available, what are some other options?

Before carrying ANY weapon someone should clarify whether firearms are prohibited on university grounds or if weapons in general are prohibited.

It's real simple. Honest people follow the rules that they have agreed to. If you are not going to follow the rules, cowboy up and go get another job. As for trying to lie about about it, plan on getting caught. If you are afraid, walk with a buddy, call security, etc.

Question: Why can't you just have security personnel escort you to your vehicle each evening? After all, that's why they get paid! You can't carry, but they CAN.

(That's what you do at the hospitals and campuses where I live.)
