Mossy 5500 MkII
I need help. I have a Mossberg 5500 MkII that doesn't want to fire. The action seems to work OK - it will chamber and eject shells.
But the hammer won't drop. It's almost like the safety is on, the trigger doesn't move. What could be wrong? thanks! |

If your 5500 uses the same tang mounted safety as the 500, it's probably broken.
They come from the factory made of plastic, and when they break, they can do so in the safety on position. If so, just replace with a metal one from the usual mail order houses. The broken part just unscrews from the top, just be careful not to lose the detent ball and spring underneath it.

Yo, brown trout
If my 60 year old memory is correct, i do believe that "brownell's" has the steel replacement parts for this shotgun.

Thanks guys... I figured it out. There were 2 pieces of the fire-control assembly (the trigger itself and another 'tab' that pushed the sear) that were gunked and corroded together somehow, limiting the movement. That sucker was SOLID but a little gunscrubber on there and it freed up. Works fine now.
Sometimes it's the simplest thing. |
