Power bond bullets

I just got my order in from power bond bullets. Very fast turn around, ordered Sunday night, got em today. My question is, they are 165 FMJ, what is a good low end recipe to start out with ? I'm using Winchester 231 powder. I looked at hodgdon web site but I'm not sure where to start with this bullet.

Just to clarify, what cartridge are you loading?

Sorry about that , 40 S&W. I think it's 4.8 to 5.3 just not positive about it .

Please take a look at the lower left of this page. If this is your source, you will see that these bullets are in fact plated as opposed to FMJ. http://powerbondbullets.com/about.html

If so, I would compare the bullets to lead in reloading them. As a general rule when loading plated bullets, you should use the same loading data as a cast bullet. I believe the load data you shared is for a jacketed 165g Sierra bullet.

I would consider dropping back on the low charge and start under the 4.8g of 231 noted. How much is the question? That I cant help with.

Lee 2nd ed. lists a 170gr lead bullet load starting at 4.0 and maxing at 5.2 of 231 .... With 165gr plated, I'd not go that low (4.0) ..... I'd start with 4.5.

Thanks for the heads up on the bullits being plated. I will start with 4.5 and go from there.

+1 on jimbob's suggestion. dont go too low w/ the 40. 10% lower would be the suggestion. I would go with 4.4 - 4.5 and see how they do. I have 500 powerbond 230g 45 to load up in the near future. please post up on your experience with your load work up.

165 gr 40S&W Montana Gold FMJ/JHP with 5.0 gr of W231/HP-38 makes a good target load.

I have used Berry's, HSM, Rainier, PowerBond, Speer TMJ and X-Treme plated bullets and IMO, Sierra TMJ seems to have the thickest plating followed by Berry's TP/PowerBond/X-Treme.

I have used 4.8 - 5.0 gr of W231/HP-38 with PowerBond 165 gr RNFP at 1.125" OAL with good results. I referenced 1999 Winchester lead load data and current Hodgdon jacketed load data.
