scope dilema

I am purchasing a weatherby vanguard in 257 mag. This gun will mostly be used for deer hunting. I have narrowed my scope decision down to Leupold
vx-2 4x12x40 ao or a vx-2 6x18x40 ao. My average shots are over 100 yds with the occasional close shots. I like the 18 power for the longer shots, but I am worried I would not be able to make the closer shots with the 6 power. Please give me your opinions or experience. thank you!

Definitely definitely do NOT get the 6-18 - if you have a close shot, you want 1.5, 2, or 3 power. 4 at the absolute most. 4-12 is at the very top end of acceptable magnif for a hunting rifle. 12x is plenty for very long shots on a vital zone.

Thank you FirstFreedom. That is kind of what I was thinking.
