Anyone have an authentic Browning 1911 from WWI?
Browning never made one other than the prototypes.WWI 1911's are Colt,Springfield Armory(original one not the SA of now),and Remington.WWII are Colt,Union Switch and Signal,Remington Rand,Ithaca, and the hen's teeth rare Singer.

Here's my 1911

Thanks Scott, great piece you got there too. I always was under the impression John Browning designed and created the first ever 1911 prototype for mass production and the other manufacturers like Colt, SA, etc were just the ones who bought the rights to put it into their own production.

As I said I am the furthest thing from a 1911 expert....just a very huge fan and appreciative of their history and appearance

For those of us who respect the old .45 Auto, perhaps above all other hand guns, I post this verse. I found it 48 years ago in an old tome by Stebbins, "Pistols - A Modern Encyclopedia". It about says it all. I memorized it as an exercise for an English class...the teacher was not impressed...tho my male classmates were!! Rod

The Colt Automat … a poem

For wide open spaces, a rifle's all right,
Where there's time, space and distance, and plenty of light,
But for work on the instant, when the shooting is tight,
You can't get the slant with a rifle.

So I'll say that at times, it is all very well,
But for deviltry, death, or the raising of hell
The Colt 45 is unusually swell,
And will go where you can't with a rifle.

You can spatter a dollar at seventy feet,
With a stunning precision that's pleasing and neat,
So I'll still make the claim that the Colt can't be beat
And will do what you can't with a rifle.

So when something is crashing the alders ahead,
And it's death to the brute or you in its stead,
Let the Colt automat, the fist-filling gat, the chunky blue cat,
Chuck its competent lead!

Lots of good looking 1911 guns here. Think I just had to wipe off some drool from the side of mouth.

PT-92,

I have only had it since Thursday, but I did get to take it to the range and shoot it for the first time on Sunday. I don't really have anything to compare it to (1911 wise), but I really enjoyed it. I had a couple failure to feeds, that from what I have read are more common with .22 semi-automatics. I really attribute those to the ammo rather then the gun.

I think it was shooting a little low (an inch or two), but it comes with two other front sites you can put on the barrel, so I may try those to correct that. I am not a marksman or even very experienced, but I was quite satisfied with it.

My wife also got a Browning Buck Mark Camper that we were shooting. It was fun too, but I really just like the feel of the 1911 better.

Once I have more control over it and become a better shot, I will be looking to something with more kick <grin>. But for plinking, target shooting and getting the feel of the gun, you can't beat the 1911. The ammo costs are just too inexpensive not to. At .04 cents a bullet, you can shoot all day long.

1953 Colt Commander in .38 Super, given to me by my grandfather this weekend. Pictures aren't the greatest, I had to get at an angle so that my reflection wasn't visible on the slide

Thanks! The gun definitely shows some use, but that slide is still just as good as a mirror. The sentimental value of the gun means a lot to me, and it has actually started into my carry rotation as a result.

Nice looking pistol, Bob. I really like the front strap. I think Chuck Rogers does something similar.

KyJim,

Thanks for the compliment on the gun.

I call this my "Speed Grip" frontstrap treatment, I started doing it back about 1997 when my hands started giving out on doing checkering.

I always liked 20LPI checkering, that's what I used on a lot of my guns.
After coming up with the ideal on doing the "Speed Grip" I actually prefer it over checkering.

It gives an excellent griping surface, every bit as good as checkering, but it's not as abrasive to the users hands or clothing.

Best Regards
Bob Hunter
