Anybody know what this "AK Takedown Tool" is for?

(at least that's how it's marked at the shop)

Never had to use a tool to take down my AK

But I'll take a wild guess and say it's used to compress the recoil spring for removal/replacement.

It's labelled that way, but I never needed a tool on any of my AKs other than a gas port cleaner and punch.

I'm thinking it might be an M-14 tool........I'm familiar with AR tools and it isn't.

Ya know, I'm just about certain that's a wrench used on an M14/M1A to support the gas system while tightening the the gas plug. I suppose it could be used on an AK to hold in the same general area (barrel and gas tube), but I'm not certain why you would NEED to hold in that area on an AK.

The AK gas piston tube is pinned to the barrel. The tool depicted does indeed look like the tool for the M-14.

since there's AK traffic up here and reasonably often AK maintenance questions, let me ask this - those folks in Afghanistan... with their tough environment - hot, cold, dirt, blowing dust and general all-around tough living and battle conditions, they must have SOME maintenance headaches - or the AK has to be a truly great piece of work.

Open to remarks now (even if a bit off topic).

Well, having been on both sides of the muzzle, the AK is.

I had an AKM in the Gulf War. I tried to melt it with mag after mag of tracer on f/a: no luck, just burned the handguards (literally).

Once I tossed it into the sand and kicked it around. I picked it up and put in a mag. I had to take the mag out to hit the slide handle to knock it into battery: the first and next 29 shots ripped off without a hitch.

In a more humid climate many moons ago, I found a Chicom one so covered in rust that it had "Fur" on all metal.

I wedged it in a tree branch fork, tied 550 cord (a LONG piece) to the trigger and fired the remaining rounds. No problem. Broke it down and tossed the parts in a river.

As to the tool, I found a picture, it's an M-14 tool, mislabled.
