Remington 700 SPS, 700 ADL, or 783?

What's y'all's opinion on the three different models? I'm looking into getting a 308 or 30-06. I have an older BDL in 270 and a relatively new SPS in 25-06.

I'm personally a fan of the 700 ADL. Nothing against the SPS performance wise, just wasn't my cup of tea. As for the 783, wait a year or 2 to make sure its not another 770. I really wish Remington would come back out with a slightly updated 788. That was a budget rifle that really outshot the 700.

The SPS and ADL are the same gun. The SPS has a floorplate and the ADL has a blind magazine. You generally get the ADL for a little less money and having the floorplate is not a huge deal to me. Espeically on Remigtons. They have pretty cheesey bottom metal anyway, so I'd just as soon save a few bucks and get the ADL. The savings can go towards a better scope. The 783 is unproven, and I'm not willing to be a product tester. The 700 isn't my favorite design, but it is a good one.

If you ever plan to upgrade to a better quality stock any BLD stock design will fit the SPS and there are more options avalable, especially on cheaper aftermarket stocks. But I cannot see replacing a cheap factory stock with a cheap aftermarket stock. All of the quality aftermarket stocks are available in BDL and ADL.

The only thing I retained from my SPS's is the bolt and barreled action. Since I don't care for the bolt knob I also replaced that. They are fine shooting guns but aren't really offered in a very good trim. Since they were the only factory offerings chambered in 7mm08 with a varmint contour I could find at a reasonable price, I used them for my assemblies but I hated them in factory finish.

For me, they need a trigger, stock, new bottom metal, bolt knob and a paint job to be ready to work with. Just my opinion though and there are a ton of aftermarket products available.

My first hunting rifle was a 700ADL. Three stocks later and I still love it. Part of me does wish I got a Model Seven in .308 instead though. The shorter action and barrel could be nice in some brush I've found myself in.

I'm leaning towards the x-bolt in 308 or 7-08.

I had a 700 ADL in .243 that I loved. Wonderful shooter, very accurate and smooth-operating. Another ADL or a good 788 would be my choice if I could still hunt. Probably .270, maybe .308.

Not a single thing I remember that would be bad about a Xbolt. Might spend more than you wanted but still a nice rifle.

X-bolt at academy in 308 $649

That price difference, go with the 700. You'll have money to spare for towards an optic.

I like the ADL but I really prefer the SPS just because of the "hogue style " rubbery stock.

I got a new SPS in 223. In stock configuration it shot ok but would not hold POA. Thermoplastic stocks cold flow under pressure they will not hold still. I replaced the stock and the trigger. I can tear down and even remove the scope, reassemble and almost perfect on target.

What's a decent aftermarket stock to replace a 700 SPS with? I have one in 25-06 and may replace it. Something that won't break the bank either.
