Which Makarov

I have two CZ82s and was looking for something else to shoot 9X18. I can get a Polish P64 easy and see some Russian and Bulgarian Makarovs on auction sites. The East germans are a little pricey. Are there any places to buy these other than Classic Arms and auction sites?

I found a P-64 at a gun show a couple of years ago. I got a fair deal on it. Though the seller was nice since he knew for a fact I know my butt from a hole in the ground.

You are going to pay a huge premium for East German (best of the breed imho), Russian military and Chinese as they are more rare. The Bulgarians represent the best value. Good quality and without the adjustable rear sight of the Russian Commercial models which are also good guns, but some don't like the adjustable sights. Any Makarov will be a good one, but the Bulgies and Russian Commercial models seem to be the best bang for the buck.

Please don't call every gun that shoots 9x18 a Makarov. They are no more Makarovs than a S&W 9mm is a Luger.

That being said, you can still get P-64s and PA-63s for less than $200 if you are patient. My carry gun is a P-64. Both can be great additions to a collection.

I own a Russian commercial model and my Dad owns a Bulgarian. Both are excellent pistols, neither one has had any failures at all.

The Russian has a bit nicer finish than the Bulgarian, but neither one is anything fancy. I like Dad's Bulgarian mainly because of the sights, the fixed sight seems better built than the adjustable one on my Russian gun.

Either one would serve you well.

I found two guns locally. A PA 63 and a P64, $300 each with just 1 mag. I'am going to pass even tho excellent condition

For not much more than $300 you should be able to buy BOTH the PA-63 and the P-64 together.

If CCW is any issue, I find the P64 to be the easist to carry. I'm not sure why they aren't more popular than they seem to be.

Probably the issue with the DA trigger pull hurts the P64 popularity. I'am sure I will have one soon.

I had a FEG PA-63, that was a great gun. I had half dollar groupings at 35 feet with out an issue. I ended up selling it to a older man that had a large amount of property and just wanted something for his back pocket. Paid $173.20 out the door in 09

The FEGs are CHEEEAAAP! I have seen the aplenty for around the $150 price tag and I don't think I'd pay any more than that. My brother has a Baikal Mak. I can't remember what how much he's into it, but I'd guess around the $250 region. It is a solid gun and I can chase holes all day with it and it's the only gun/caliber combo I can get to do that. I have heard lauds of the Bulgarian ones as well. Honestly, it's a good caliber and I don't really think you'd be cheating yourself with any specific make. Makarovs are definitely prettier (relative term, I guess) than the Hungarian pistols and that's what I'd prefer myself.

I've not yet acquired a handgun, despite my age, and have read a lot (25 hours+) about the P-64 and a few other .380 handguns: actual Maks, CZ-83, Bersa T.,
Sig 232, PPK.

A few friends 'carry' the P-64, but after three brief sessions with the gun, could not get used to the recoil. I sometimes shoot my Enfield #5 "Jungles" with No pad when wearing t-shirts, but that 64 is hard for me to get used to. The Bersa T. .380 is so much more pleasant.

The goal is Not to ever carry, but just have fun.

If you want the best of the Maks go E.German,the finish is better as is the trigger pull.And there will never be another one produced in E.Ger.
The P-64 is a nice little pistol,after you swap out the springs to lighten the trigger pull,and if you don't mind the almost vicious recoil.
Polish P-83 is even nice,but you'll have a time finding mags.
I've got Russian,Chinese,E.Ger,and Bulgarian and if i had to pick a true Mak manufactured style,to shoot at the range, it'd be E.Ger.If i want something to slip in my pocket I'd pick the P-64.

I ordered a P64 from Classic Arms and have a spring kit on the way. I might pick up A Bulgarian Mak as well. 9X18 ammo is cheap and available. I'ts about all I will shoot these days.

Fox, don't be surprised it the first hammer spring you try isn't the perfect one for that gun. My first P-64 liked the 18lb spring. The 2nd one was still too stiff with that and I had to drop down to the 17lb spring.
