Safety Myth
Awhile back I was waitng for a doctors appointment. Luckily I found a relatively current hunting magazine in the waiting room. When I remember the publication I'll try to get a link to this article.
This article had to do with areas that require shotguns only for big game hunting. A bunch guys got together a did an experiment. They even had some army ballistic guys with fancy electronic gadgets. They then fired a .30-06, a 12 gauge slug, and a muzzle loader. They used their computers and tracking equipment to track how far these different projectile traveled. here are the results. Rifle-2.5 miles Shotgun-2.0 miles Blackpowder-1.75 miles. They concluded that even though the rifle bullet does travel further, the whole safety arguement isn't that valid. |

The shotgun is only useless when the person who is in charge of it does not know what he or she is doing.

A shotgun, like any firearm, is nearly useless when it is empty. Nearly useless as it may still be used for horizontal and vertical butt strokes or as a club. It is completely useless when destroyed. A shotgun that is poorly cared for an inoperable due to rust or damage might also be considered useless.
