Hurry, which Muzzleloader?
I am trading an old climber stand I don't use today for a black powder rifle, I can have my pick of one of three. Meeting him this evening so I need to make my decision, I can have either a T/C .54 Hawkens, A T/C .50 Renegade, or a NEF break open Huntsman. I know very little about blackpowder guns, I had a tc black diamond a while ago and traded it away because I didn't like it. I might use this gun for the late ML season whitetail hunting, thats my hope anyway. So which one should I choose? Here's the pic he emailed me.

Would stick with the TC's and on them, check the overall condition of both and make sure you check the bore with a bore light, then make your choice. Up front, I'd go for the .54 even though I don't like the brass tacks. If you ever decide to sell whatever you buy you will get more out of the .54. Now, that is just my opinion. The .54 is not over-kill on deer. Go fer it !!!

Take whichever one that you can sell for the most money and then buy a Savage ML10 smokeless muzzleloader.

Hurry
I agree, take the Hawken....then trade it in for a .54 Lyman GPR. Great gun, great accuracy.

Thanks guys, guess its pretty unanimous. I emailed him and laid claim to the 54 hawkins. Now the question is will I get enough time to shoot it and get comfortable before ML season. Heck, even if I just hang it over the fireplace it'll be nice to have.

The .54 Hawkens would be my choice too. Big ball, handy and easy to sell if you ever want to upgrade.

My dad has a Hawken 54 and it's the most accurate BP rifle I've ever shot. It's superb.

Congrats on your pick. Assuming the bore`s where in equally good shape, you made a good choice. Goodluck!

I MIGHT be able to get a range report next weekend, this is november, and any time I can get in the woods I'll be hunting! Maybe I could try some shooting after a morning hunt. I'll try to get some pics posted soon, its a beautiful rifle in great shape, except there is some freckling in the bore, and I would probably get it recrowned if it doesn't shoot very well, looks some ramrod wear.

You did NOT just infer that you're going hunting with it without even shooting it first? Did you?
Shooting report be damned, we don't need one that bad just yet, but you sort of inferred that you're just going hunting with it now and will shoot it for a report afterward... Sounds kind of unproductive in the overall grand scheme of things.... |

Not even close. Every moment I can get into the woods I will be hunting. With a bow. Our firearms season doesn't even open for another two weeks. I'm just saying that I should get time after a morning hunt to put my bow away and break out the old smokepole for some target practice, but I don't know when, because the pre-rut is on and the deer are moving! Not even sure if I'll hunt with it this year, but of course I wouldn't until I had sighted it in and was comfortable with it.
