A fun weekend
This past weekend a friend and I took off to our property in SW Texas to hunt doves and axis deer. We my 8YO son played hookie from school and joined us.
We didn't see a single dove, save for one Mexican dove that wasn't worth shooting, but we spotlighted a whole lot of axis. Unfortunately, they were so mixed in with the whitetails eating the corn we threw out for them that it became impossible to shoot an axis without the risk of overpenetration and hitting a whitetail too. I thought it would be difficult to explain why we were cleaning an axis and whitetail late at night (out of whitetail season as well) after spotlighting to a game warden, so we just watched them. For those who were in the field in Texas over the past weekend, you know how perfect the weather was in my part (near Uvalde), and I thought of all of you who may be nearby doing similar things. Fortunately, I was able to catch a whole lot of bass and catfish for dinner. I was not able to to tell my wife why I spent so much money to go and still come back empty handed, but it was fun. So- does anybody here actually spotlight for axis deer? I assumed it is legal just as with hogs in this state.

Sounds like a blast - at least you got some fish to eat!

Sounds like you had alot of fun. Glad your son was able to go along for the trip. We need to get the youngsters trained up to take our place when we are too old to hunt and fish.
