Powder charge, case head area, type of headspace, case size and volume, and others I'm sure to have missed. From those factors you get the differences in kinetic energy and momentum of the projectile which lead to the differences in recoil and performance.

Are you asking about the projectile itself? They all can use the same size bullet {.308}. The type of bullet and what you are using it for is the difference between them.

Buy the Nosler 6 Manual. It includes a nice article with each cartridge explaining the history. Worth the $20.

Recoil is a big difference between 30-06 and the 30 caliber magnums. The magnums are more expensive to reload as the brass cases are more costly, and they use more powder. Same 30 caliber bullets in all. Here's a recoil chart showing differences in rifles. The magnums are not plinking rifles and become unpleasant to shoot off the bench after only a few rounds. I have a .300 Weatherby and love it but it's not for plinking paper targets at the range.

rg1 is right. The biggest difference you feel is the recoil of the 30-06 compared to the others. For the same weight bullet, the 300 Win Mag and 300 WSM will get you an extra 250 fps or so. The 300 Weatherby will get you a bit more than that. And recoil a bit more as well. Shooting full-power high velocity 300 magnum loads can get old in a hurry. I used to have a 300 Win mag. Shooting the first 20 rounds in a session wasn't too bad. But if I shot 40 rounds in one session, I was definitely flinching at the end.
Ballistically, the WSM is about the same as the Win Mag. But it comes in a shorter fatter case, so you can use short actions. Some people think that's a big deal. I actually have a 270 WSM and a 325 WSM. Why? Just because I can since I reload. It's just different and I like to be different. Buying factory ammo for WSM cartridges though would be very expensive just because they don't sell a lot of it. Even moreso for the Weatherby cartridges. |
