700 bolt problem/question?

On my weekly pawn shop sweep I picked up a 700 PSS in .308 with the factory and a Choate stock. $650 so I feel OK.
Tried it out today and no bang.
It cocks and the firing pin sounds like it falls.
No primer mark.
I fieldstripped the bolt and used brake cleaner and CLP, still no joy.
Using a leather lace and rotating the bolt to the fired position the firing pin protrudes.

What is wrong?

Hey CP. I'm guessing you have a scope on this gun?

If so, take a look at which screws you have holding on the scope mounts. On my 700, if you have the long mounting screws where the short ones go, the pin won't drop. (not that I've ever made that mistake....LOL)
Dry fire the gun just how it is now and take note of how far the pin drops, then take the mount off and do the same. You'll see the huge difference.

If it's not that, it MAY be grease packed tight in the firing pin. I've seen that happen once, too. It was really cold outside and the factory grease was packed thick.
However, I'd guess it's the long screws in the scope mount holding it up.....

Dang
Started at Zero and took it all apart.
Some goober put one of the long screws in the front of the base.
That was stopping the bolt from the last 5 degrees of rotation.
I couldn't feel it but it was apparently just enough.

Damn...learn something new everyday, I'd never have thought of the mounting screws. Glad I put them in my 700 correctly!

Thanks, protectedbyglock!
