What are you hunting with this year?

I'm trying to decide which rifles will get the nod this year for all my hunting. I got a pronghorn and mule deer buck tags as well as a cow elk tag. I've got plenty of rifles that need to be exercised. I'm thinking for pronghorn I'll either use my 6x47 again this year or my .243 Win. I've got my .25-06 as well and I need to redeem myself with it on pronghorn at some point. That said I'm leaning toward the 6X47 again as it is a joy to shoot and dead on to 300 yards without having to adjust POA.

My elk and deer is a combo hunt and that is where I'm having the most problems deciding. I've got three rifles that I want to hunt with. Savage 99 in .358 Win, 1896 Krag in .30-40, and 1917 Remington in .300 H&H. The .300 will give me the most range, but I haven't shot anything outside of 300 yards in a long time. The 99 will get me close to 300 without too much adjustment. The old Krag is just cool, and it needs to go hunting.

Hunting deer in CA: either model 99 300 savage or sporterized 03A3 30/06. Elk in Colorado: either custom 7WSM or A-bolt 300 Win Mag. I'm really hoping that the 7WSM well be ready!

Given the choices you gave, for the antelope and deer, I would use the 25-06. For the elk, I would use the 300 H&H. And if you wanted to use the old Krag, then use it for the deer instead of the 25-06.

Wouldn't mind getting a shot on one of these big 400+lb boars with the .338WinMag. I didn't get an exit on the one last fall with the '06 and a 165grn bullet. Though that was a boiler room shot, where normally its in the ear.

I will be using my H&R Handi-Rifle in .38/.357,,,
For varmints like coyotes and armadillos.

If I decide to harvest a deer at my nephews land,,,
I'll do it from a tree stand with a 6" S&W 629,,,
There won't be a shot over 30 yards,,,
Not from the tree stands anyways.

After 25 years of big game hunting with my Rem. 700 .30-06, I'm transitioning to a handier Winchester Model 88 carbine in .308 this year. Yes, I know it's not the best idea to made such a substantial change, but I've always wanted to hunt with an '88 and finally found a custom-stocked one that was specifically configured for scope use. With U.S. 7.62x51 ammo being so inexpensive, at least I will be able to have substantial practice this summer.

Antelope:
#1 - Ruger M77 Tang Safety, .243 Win, 6.5-20x50mm Vari-X III, 95 gr Hornady SST.
#2 - Ruger M77 Mk II, .270 Win, 3.5-10x40mm VX-3, load undecided (probably a 140 gr Ballistic Tip; possibly a partition, just because they shoot so well).

If I somehow end up with an Elk tag:
Marlin XL7, .30-06, Redfield Revolution 3-9x40mm, probably shooting 180 gr Norma Oryx.
Or, the .270, with 140 gr Partitions.

Whitetail this year, either a Remington Model 700 ADL in .308 or a Savage 11 in .308. Yeah, I know.

The problem is that I shot them both this morning and they both satisfy.

Once deer season starts, I'll be using mostly my Sako in 270, but that Ruger compact in 260, as I get older, gets more and more use. I truly love that Sako (just such a great rifle), but it is kinda heavy.

Mossberg 500. 2 3/4" 00 Buck. Can't use rifles in my county and it wouldn't benefit me anyway because the woods are very thick.

Since I have plenty of time I may throw a scope and slug barrel on it. My cousin has this setup and it is a monster. Can't quite decide. Decisions decisions decisions.

If the woods are thick a scope might not be a good idea, although +1 for the slug barrel.

I used to use a L/E MkIII with a 3X9 scope, I now use my SKS with iron sights.

I agree. They are fairly thick now but I'm still debating because its been a few years since I hunted the area so I have no way of knowing how thick it will be when the leaves drop. I might just buy a 20ga and make it my all the time slugger. Its a good tool to have in the cabinet. Plus the 20ga will be a little easier on the shoulder.

I'm hunting antelope in Wyoming this fall. I'll be using my Savage 7mm Rem Mag with a Nikon Monarch 3x9.

During whitetail season here in Kentucky, I'll either be using my Savage mentioned above or my Ruger No. 1 45-70 Gov't capped with a Nikon Monarch 3x9.
