USPSA Single Stack = 1911
Other single stack magazine guns need not apply. The P239 is best shot in USPSA Production or IDPA SSP.

Thank you very much, that will clear that up for me.

I dont think that there is an IDPA organization out here locally, I have been trying to find information on places to shoot, but it is tough to find. I just recentlly found a place that shoots USPSA matches. I hear that IDPA is a little easier and less mags required and less ammo shot each time, wish I could find something local for IDPA.

Sig or Glock.

If you go with the M&P, order one with out that stupid magazine safety. It doesn't help the trigger pull

I would never buy a M&P... I own a Sig P229R just bought about a week ago, and I own a Glock 23 I just bought a week ago. I have shot the M&P 9 and it shoots nothing like my P229R, if a person can afford the higher price for the Sig it shoots very smooth and the trigger pull is great.

Your user name indicates that you might have a bit of bias in that regard, though.

Well most everyone has their favorite right? Well I have been shooting Sigs for a long time and really like them. I just recently decided to buy a Glock, and I must say that the 23 shoots very nice as well. I plan to shoot either one in USPSA, I dont know if I can shoot 2 different guns in the Production division or not.

I was just busting your chops - I'm partial to 1911s myself, so don't worry.

I didn't read through this whole thread, but if you go to IDPA's website, you can punch in your zip code and find a club near you that holds matches. That's how I found the place I shoot at. Did the same thing over at USPSA's website also. In my case, for IDPA I got a 45 minute drive, and a 50 minute drive for USPSA. Now that I've shot both, I prefer IDPA.

Well I am glad that you brought that up, I didnt even think about going to the IDPA website. Stupid me... I found that there is a Local Fresno Club, and I have send the contact on the website an email asking for info and where and when. Thanks guys for all your help and I will end up going to BOTH matches and see which one will be for me. I have heard from several people that prefer shooting IDPA instead of USPSA due to less ammo required.

less ammo sucks

I found USPSA rules and events (way) easier
(but I would still shoot IDPA if it was more local).

Well there is a IDPA shoot tonight at the range i am a member at, I was thinking about going to watch, but dont know if people can just watch. The range is very small on the side they do the IDPA and I have heard that they usually have like 40-50 shooters. Even if I go tonight, I would not even get to meet the Club leader as he will not be there due to a NRA dinner here in town tonight. I am thinking about it, but it would be just to get info on what equipment people are using, not really to watch the shooting (Dont want to get in the way and be THAT guy).

TAKE YOUR GEAR & AMMO with you to the match.
As long as you can be a safe shooter, folks will go way out of their way to help you with equipment, extra rounds, mag pouches, holsters, etc.

Well as of right now, I dont have anything but my 2 pistols. I have have not taken action on buying a holster or mag pouches yet. I wanted to go to my first IDPA and USPSA matches to talk to people and watch the shoots before I bought anything. I might take my stuff just to burn a box of 50 on the Range, and watch a few shooters and talk to a few people.

Well if it is equipment you are worried about, don't be. A lot of guys start out with cheap stuff like fobus and uncle mike's, then after they get into it a bit more, they drop some cash into some decent equipment. I started out with an uncle mike's paddle holster and a fobus double mag pouch for IDPA. Then after shooting in a few matches, and realizing that this was a fun sport/hobby that I wanted to do more often, I spent some money on a better set up. Now I use a Blade Tech standard belt holster and a G-Code double mag pouch with my all stock (except sights) Glock 34. I would go watch or shoot in the match. You would be surprized how nice and helpful people will be. Guys like to answer questions and talk about their gear. You got to start some where and every one was a new shooter at some time in their life.

9MM for USPSA or IDPA

I can't afford the points down in USPSA for shooting Minor, hence my new 1 year old G35. I can download Wimp rounds to minor for IDPA to be pretty good there in local matches.

Stevie,

I have to admit that I have no idea what you are taling about...lol I am a real Newbie here and that doesnt make sense to me sorry.

I was not able to attend the match this past Friday, but I talked to the Director on saturday (Which is my normal Shooting day), he was practicing at the range too. I am going to go to next months match and go through the safety orientation and do plan to shoot next month for the first time. The local club had a Classifier yesterday, but i could not attend that either due to standing Sunday obligations with my wife.

I want to ask this... I never see ANYONE say that they suggest a Sig P228,P229 or any other Sig for USPSA? I just bought a Sig P229 9mm and was thinking about going to a couple shoots here where I live, and I have been looking aroud, and no one ever says anything about the Sigs. Are they not good for IDPA/USPSA matches? Just curious, I alsohave a Glock 23 I was thinking about using.
That heavy first trigger pull in double action on a DA/SA gun puts you at a significant disadvantage against people shooting Glocks and M&Ps which have a same-every-shot lighter trigger.

It's not to say that you can't win with a Sig, but it is harder.

Yeah I would have to see what the Dims are with the 10 round. I have one more for you... The P239 mag is considered a 8 round single stack, would that mean that I could shot that pistol in the Single Stack Div? Or is that more 1911's and nothing else? Even the 10 round for the P239 is a single stack Mag.
The rules for USPSA Single Stack Division is that the gun has to be a 1911 platform pistol. What I didn't realize until recently was that they didn't have to be .45acp. If you shoot a 1911 in .40 or 9mm, you score as Minor but are still fully legal.

In most USPSA divisions (but not Production), your gun has to be a minimum caliber to be scored as "Major." If it is smaller, it is scored as "Minor." What this means is that the scores you receive for hits on a target are potentially different for Major versus Minor.

Both receive the same number of points for a perfect ("A" Zone) hit, but Minor receives less points than Major for hits in the B, C, and D Zones.

The reason for this is to penalize those shooters who are using smaller calibers because they are getting an advantage from the theoretically reduced recoil.

So, what Steve was specifically refering to was that he owns a Glock 35 (.40S&W competition-length model). Since it is .40S&W, it is scored "Major" in USPSA Limited and Limited-10 division (assuming his ammo also meets the minimum power rating). If he wants to use it in IDPA SSP Division, he can load his ammo to a lower power and not have a terrible recoil disadvantage over those people shooting 9mm guns in that Division.

The G35 is a good choice, but you need to reload your own ammo to get the best advantage out of it.

Fresno has good people. I'm involved up in Richmond (Bay Area) and Sacramento to a lesser extent (and I'm also Match Director for the California State IDPA Championship). I would encourage you to find a couple of guys willing to carpool, and come up to either a Sacramento match (first Sunday of every month) or Richmond's (our next one is April 26th).

Best,

Jim

Well Jim,

Thank you for the invitation, I just might take you up on that... I would just make my wife come with me. I really am trying to push her into shooting IDPA with me, but she still isnt sure yet. Thanks again and I will keep in touch with you if I can make it up there one day.

If you shoot a 1911 in .40
You'd score major, actually in Single Stack division. The minimum bullet size for Major in Single Stack division is .40, same as in Limited or L-10.

Well I was at the Range this past Saturday and my wife and I shot a S&W 1911 .45 and she loved it. She told me I could go ahead and buy one of those and she would shoot it. So I am looking around at all the different makers and models and trying to figure out what I think I want. Then I would have no problems with the minimums problem, I would just be shooting a Single Stack 1911 .45

so she made it easy

Buy a 5" S&W 1911 made from carbon or stainless steel; might get one with an adjustable rear sight.

(Wilson 8-rd 47D magazines seem to work flawlessly in numerous examples. Holsters can be a $15 Uncle Mike Kydex Belt Holster and similarly-priced magazine pouches. But buy a good belt.)

FYI, the M&P Pro has now had the 2k unit requirement for IPSC Production met, so if you want to run the new longslide M&Ps they're legal.
Not *all* from the longslide models. True as far as the M&P Pro. The 9L model is still short 500ish units I believe.

Yeah I have been thinking about the S&W 1911, but I still really like the Para 1911's and am still looking into which will work best for me.

Right now I am just concentrating on getting my reloading equipment setup and my supplies stocked up, so I can start shooting a little more per week. Right now we are shooting boughten ammo and we shoot about 200 a week, and I would like to up that to about 300-350 rounds a week.

My son and I shoot IDPA with M&P's (9mm and 40 S&W). I know we have about 10,000 round through them and never had a failure to feed or jamb. Love those guns! Going to by a third one (9mm) so my wife can join us.

The M&P is the most comfortable, naturally pointing gun I own. Never liked the grip angle of Glocks. But, a lot of people like em"
