packing grease

I have researched for a day or two looking into info on the internet regarding removing packing grease on a new shotgun. I've narrowed it down to what I think is the best 3 ways to go about this. 1) use hot water 2) brake cleaner 3) rubbing alcohol. Are these good enough for the task?

None of the above. Go to a hardware store and buy some mineral spirits (paint thinner) or use kerosene. Do this outside in open air. Please don't use brake cleaner. Use something with a low flash point.

Appreciate it guys, will look into the mineral spirits. I think the low odor kind would be ideal.

Also, how important is removing the excess packing grease in a semi auto? Can I just cut it and not completely wipe it out?

Berettas and Remingtons, Slope, for preservatives, AKA Grease, inside.

Cleaned both out recently.

Neither stuck like cosmoline, but both required work and Hoppe's.

All I've seen was a film of oil.

Lots of the guns that come form overseas - like the Brownings ...have a lot of preservative in them.....( semi-autos / O/U's, etc ...)....

I'd suggest using WD-40 as a cleaner / and yes, it is really important that it all be cleaned out ...and the gun be properly lubed when you put it back together - in my opinion. For lube - I'd recommend Break Free.

my beretta didnt seem to have much of any packing grease in it. i gave it a few squirts of hoppes oil in the action, racked it a few times and then put 150 rounds through it with no problems.
