Own An LNL AP Press? Seeking Serial Numbers & Purchase Date Info For Data Base

Hey folks,

I started a thread with the same name over on THR ( http://www.thehighroad.org/showthrea...99#post6227499 ), with the intention of gathering information on Hornady LNL AP production since its inception in 1997. I didn't want to start the same thread on both THR and TFL, but after more than a week, I suspect I may be missing some folks here at TFL, so I thought I would see if I could get some more information from folks here who have not seen this thread on THR.

The Hornady LNL AP progressive press has been in production since 1997, and I was curious as to how many of these presses have been made since then along with how the production numbers changed throughout the twelve plus years they have been on the market. So far, over 24,000 of these units have been sold since 1997, the data listed below represents the latest information reported thus far:

--------Hornady LNL AP Serial Numbers & Dates Purchased---------

Please feel welcome to add your information to the list.

Hey folks,

I have added some more reports from owners to the list, and the data shown below represents everything I have received thus far:

--------Hornady LNL AP Serial Numbers & Dates Purchased---------
--------------------------------- Original Type -------------------
---Serial #-----When Bought------Case Kicker-----Member Reporting
----1,525-----June?----1997------Wire eject-------Dave Wile

---13,978-----July-----2008-------Wire eject-------Dynamite Rabbit (Lee)
---14,281-----Aug-----2008-------Wire eject-------RNG (Richard)
---16,5xx-----Dec-----2008------ -EZ-Ject--------Mongoose

---21,949-----Oct-----2009-------EZ-Ject---------Rkohut
---22,151-----Dec-----2009-------EZ-Ject---------NRA-Highmaster

---23,92x-----Dec-----2009------------------------1911pewpew
---24,xxx-----Jan------2010------------------------Macnewbie

What follows are additional comments made by the members that do not fit well with the listing above, but they are of interest in their own right:

---Canuck, IL - Reports that change in primer system came at serial number 7,000.
---Walkalong - Has a Pro-Jector with serial # 18,396. He also says the $29 he spent for his EZ-Ject upgrade was worth the expense.
---Randy - States that Hornady started offering the EZ-Ject system in Jan 2009. Serial number unknown. Converted his to EZ-Ject in June 09.
---Dodge DeBoulet - Indicated his press came with 3 powder drop tubes, two primer slides & seating punches; also indicated his powder screw tubes are not micrometer style which seems to be an add on purchase.
---Ole Farmer Buck - Stated that Hornady told him the EZ-Ject system started with serial number 15,000.
---RNG (Richard) Upgraded to EZ-Ject in October 2009 and considers it money well spent.
---Gryffydd - Powder measure comes with baffle now. Purchased from Graff's.
---1911pewpew - Purchased from Midway.
---Fella5 (Scott) - Purchased from Midway.

Again it would be nice to have more data, and it would be nice to have further comments as listed above.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

Additional comments made by LNL owners are noted below:

---Ole Farmer Buck - Hornady told him they started the EZ-Ject system with serial number 15,000, so his press at 16,153 is one of the first presses with EZ-Ject. He also reports he just got his 2nd LNL press Jan 2010.
---Mongoose - Hornady started offering the EZject in Jan '09--I bought my LnL in December '08 and it has the EZ-ject.
---Thorn originally had wire eject, but has upgraded to EZ-Ject subplate.
---Smith627 has upgraded to EZ-Ject - problems with 9mm. Has problems seating primers low enough
---Sommerled reports his oldest (2001) LNL press has the old primer system with the brass tubes where you remove the whole steel containment sleeve. I prefer this older style. It also has the primer plunger with thumb nut that is a poor design, hard to tighten and comes loose alot. Also the return spring for the powder measure pulls down at an angle with this older press and it sometimes binds up if not dry lubed. The wire ejects work most of the time when I occaisionaly rub a little die sizing wax on the contact area with a Qtip.

I will keep adding data to the list as long as folks continue reporting information via thread data, PM, or E-Mail. Of the 32 owners reporting, only three or four of them report purchases prior to 2008. Obviously, Hornady has sold a whole lot of these presses in the past two years even though they have been making them since 1997.

You will notice I have added the three LNL presses Sommerled just reported he has purchased over the years, and one of them goes back to a 2001 purchase date. It is good to have a new press reported between the 1997 press and those that start in 2008.

For a challenge of sorts, allow me to point out that I still have the oldest press (serial #1,525) reported so far, so how about some of those even older folks check their serial numbers and purchase dates and report them?

Also remember that I keep this LNL press info on a M-Soft Excel spreadsheet. I can send a copy of the Excel file to anyone who wants it via E-Mail.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

Hey folks,

Three LNL presses (2001, 2008, & 2009) were just reported by Sommerled on a sister thread located on The High Road. Sommerled reports all three of his presses work well and are used by a number of different folks.

Best wishes,

Hornady L-N-L Serial Numbers

Was wondering if you are still collecting Lock n Load serial numbers? If so, what have you learned from this data? If you are I will add mine to your list if it will help your quest.

Best wishes to you

I am puzzled.

Why not just call Hornady and speak to someone in the front office and have them tell you all that you are searching for.
I will bet they have the exact numbers and dates.
If they will not share, that is a different matter.

Hey folks,

Instead of having multiple locations for this information, I have been making updates of information to a single thread -- http://www.thehighroad.org/showthrea...31#post8474031 -- which is located on The High Road forum. I have let this thread on TFL pass by without any further action for quite some time.

I just posted updated information on the High Road thread, and I suggest if you want to check on L&L progressive ownership data to check it out there.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

The wire eject system was apparently changed to the EZ-Ject system in the fall of 2008 supposedly starting with SN 16,000.

Additional comments made by LNL owners are noted as follows:

---Canuck, IL - Reports that change in primer system came at serial number 7,000.

---Walkalong - Has a Pro-Jector with serial # 18,396. He also says the $29 he spent for his EZ-Ject upgrade was worth the expense.

---Sommerled reports his oldest (2001) LNL press has the old primer system with the brass tubes where you remove the whole steel containment sleeve. It also has the primer plunger with thumb nut that is a poor design, hard to tighten and comes loose alot. Also the return spring for the powder measure pulls down at an angle with this older press and it sometimes binds up if not dry lubed. The wire ejects work most of the time when occasionally rubbed with a little die sizing wax on the contact area with a Q-tip.

---I also have the original primer system as described by Sommerled. While I have filed smooth the edges of the primer plungers, I do not have any problems with my primer system. I do keep the shuttle slide clean and dry lubed.

---Dodge DeBoulet idicates his press came with 3 powder drop tubes, two primer slides & seating punches; also indicated his powder screw tubes are not micrometer style which seems to be an add on purchase.

---Sageen's original press was replaced by Hornady because 45ACP and 44 Mag cases would hit sizer die on outside edge and not enter die without hand adjustment.

I will continue to add new data as long as folks continue reporting same on this thread. I keep this LNL serial number info on a M-Soft Excel spreadsheet. I can send a copy of the Excel file via E-Mail to anyone who would like it.

Best wishes,

Additional comments made by LNL owners are noted as follows:

The wire eject system was apparently replaced by the EZ-Ject system in the fall of 2008 starting on or about with SN 16,000. I still continue to use the original wire eject system that came with my press, and it works just fine for me. I suspect all of the changes Hornady has made over the years has been to reduce as much as possible the opportunity for operator error, but when you have a machine with all the cogs, levers, and whatever all operating together, there is no way to make it completely “idiot” proof. This has been a good machine for me since 1997. - Dave Wile

---Dodge DeBoulet indicates his press came with 3 powder drop tubes, two primer slides & seating punches; also indicated his powder screw tubes are not micrometer style which seems to be an add on purchase.

---Sageen's original press was replaced by Hornady because 45ACP and 44 Mag cases would hit sizer die on outside edge and not enter die without hand adjustment.

---Glockdk lives in Denmark and his drive hub broke after 500 rounds of 9mm. He notified Hornady and received a new hub days later - in Denmark.

I will continue to add new data as long as folks continue reporting same on this thread. I keep this LNL serial number info on a M-Soft Excel spreadsheet. I can send a copy of the Excel file via E-Mail to anyone who would like it.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

Hey Gary,

In your earlier post, you asked...

"I am puzzled.

Why not just call Hornady and speak to someone in the front office and have them tell you all that you are searching for.
I will bet they have the exact numbers and dates.
If they will not share, that is a different matter.

Gary"

Hornady has no idea to whom individual presses have been sold. Hornady sells them to distributors who then sell them to final vendors such as gun shops and the like. They are not a controlled item, so no record is kept as to who bought what, when, and where. Remember, Hornady has been selling this press since the summer of 1997, and they are now approaching 41,000 total units sold thus far.

When I first started collecting this information, I was simply curious as to how the press was doing in sales. I bought one of the first presses (Serial # 1525) in the summer of 1997, and it has been interesting to see how their increase in production and sales has risen steadily over the past 15 years.

Hey Airboss,

I noticed your post a week or so ago, but I do not think you ever sent me the particulars on your L&L AP. If you do, I will add it to the list.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

Mine is serial No 21257. Not sure when I bought it to be honest - 2008 or so seems about right. It came with the EZ Eject, and I do remember the advertising saying it was "New EZ Eject". Bought it at Cabela's in Glendale, AZ.

Still going strong, and runs better than ever with my mods to the primer system.

You may also have to go back and check on the productions of Pacific Presses. Hornady bought them out.

Additional comments made by LNL owners are noted as follows:

---Dave Wile - The wire eject system was apparently replaced by the EZ-Ject system in the fall of 2008 starting on or about with SN 16,000. I still continue to use the original wire eject system that came with my press, and it works just fine for me. I suspect all of the changes Hornady has made over the years have been to reduce as much as possible the opportunity for operator error, but when you have a machine with all the cogs, levers, and whatever all operating together, there is no way to make it completely “idiot” proof. This has been an excellent machine for me since the summer of 1997.

---Canuck, IL - Reports the change in the primer system came at serial number 7,000.

It also has the primer plunger with thumb nut that is a poor design, hard to tighten and comes loose a lot. Also the return spring for the powder measure pulls down at an angle with this older press and it sometimes binds up if not dry lubed. The wire ejects work most of the time when occasionally rubbed with a little die sizing wax on the contact area with a Q-tip.

---Dave Wile - I also have the original primer system as described by Sommerled. While I have smoothed the edges of the primer plungers with a fine file, I do not have any problems with my primer system. I do keep the shuttle slide clean and dry lubed. I also found wood dowels to fit inside the brass primer tubes. The dowels put a bit of weight on the primers and make it possible for the last few primers to feed properly. I also painted marks on the tops of the dowels to show how many primers remain in the tubes.

Recent Comments:

Swampman1 asked, "I'm also puzzled...as to the relevance of knowing these numbers. Or the interest for that matter?"

Response: When I first started collecting this information, I was simply curious as to how the press was doing in sales. I bought one of the first presses (Serial #1525) in the summer of 1997, and it has been interesting to see how their increase in production and sales has risen steadily over the years. Also, Hornady has made several design changes to different system parts over the years, and the information collected from these folks has been useful to document when said changes were made. Simple curiosity about the development of the machine from the end users' point of view is the main reason.

PA-Joe stated, "You may also have to go back and check on the productions of Pacific Presses. Hornady bought them out. "

Response: Yes, Hornady bought out Pacific and continued production of the Pacific 366 progressive shotshell reloader. However, to the best of my knowledge, the Hornady L&L AP reloader is a Hornady machine and not a product of Pacific development. The L&L AP did evolve from the Hornady Projector progressive, but that, too, was strictly a Hornady product - not Pacific.

I will continue to add new data as long as folks continue reporting same on this thread. I keep this LNL serial number info on a M-Soft Excel spreadsheet. I can send a copy of the Excel file via E-Mail to anyone who would like it.

Best wishes,

Based on the serial numbers, I obviously bought my press in 2009.

I want to say that I paid right around $400 for it, but also was still in the slot for the 1000 bullet promotion they had going. I ended up with 1000 "free" 150 gr FMJ .308 projectiles, which if you go by the cost then and subtract processing & shipping, took about $200 off the price, so ultimately I got my press for about $200.

Not a bad deal when you think about it. Especially since I ended up falling into a nice Garand about 4 months after I bought the press, so the projectiles became useful to me.

I got the thousand bullets too , 1000 rounds of 40 caliber. I paid just under $400 for it and so that makes my deal about $160 for the press. My serial number was 19099...LOUD
