257 Roberts loads?
My brother-in-law has asked me to reload 257 Roberts for him. I have no experience with this caliber. He says he wants a 117gr boattail softpoint bullet. Any suggestions on loads for these? He will be using these on central TX whitetail deer. Thanks.

All my 257 Roberts loads are for 100 grain max, so I don't have established loads that will help you.
In general about the 257 Roberts loads, there is considerable variation in throat length rifle to rifle, so make sure you establish maximum OAL length for your rifle. The really old rifles were for much lower pressure, assuming yours is a modern rifle +P loads should be fine it in. |

I've loaded up a few test loads for my dad's .257 Roberts but we have yet to try them out. I don't remember the charge weights, but I used H4350 and 120 grain Nosler Partitions for these first test rounds.

I've a Remington M722 "Bob" with a 24" barrel and have run several loads downrange with Sierra 117spbt. I like the bullet, but it's about as long as my barrel will shoot. I prefer 100 grainers, having used Speer, Sierra, Hornady and Remington.
I like to keep the ogive about .010" off the leade, so don't even have OALs listed in my load-book. I use the head-to-ogive length because it's easier to compare different brands. Your rifle will prolly be different, anyway. I've even had to lengthen the magazine in my rifle so the longer cartridge OAL will fit. I've shot some fair-passable groups from mine with the 117Sierra spbt and WW +P cases filled with 42.5gr of H4350 and sparked by CCI 200 primers. Velocities from my rifle were 2800fps(2810 average) 42.0 gr of H4350 with Federal 210s gave 2760fps with slightly smaller groups, in MY gun. Good luck, and have fun... Gene |

Not getting many responses here, but thanks guys for the ones I did get. Gene: Your response was particularly good. Mike's too. I was looking at the H4350 already, so will probably go with that. Anybody tried any of the Accurate powders?

I pretty much settled on 115 Grn Berger (Hunting VLD) bullets pushed by 42 grs of 4350.
Works good in my M-70 Featherweight. Great for deer and antelope.

257 Roberts?
Varget has given me excellent performance in my Roberts. Like others I shoot 100gr bullets. It killed a 250lb Red Deer cull DRT at just over 175yds.
