Ok, got a 28-2 #N536396 Seems like a late model number to me, 80's manufacture maybe?

You're on the right track: N500000 to N600000 date from 1978 - 1980.

Smith & Wesson Model 10-6 that I have received from a family estate. The serial # is D352XXX.

D330001 -D420000 date to 1971 - 1972. It is safe to use with .38Spl. +P ammunition.

Model 10s are almost as good as currency. Because so many were made values aren't high (except maybe in factory new condition with box and all accessories). On the other hand because they are so popular they are easy to sell. Ballpark value $300 assuming typical blue wear and handling marks for its age, but otherwise in sound operating condition.

I've searched this thread for "28-2". I'm thinking based on the S serials I've seen dated, 1964 maybe for mine? S252XXX

Ok guys, this is my first visit and first post to TheFiringLine. Please help me out with the year of manufacture for the following three S&W revolvers I own:

I lost a sweet Model 27 that I bought new back in 1985 (purchased in 1983) - still licking my wound over that. I also gifted a well-used Model 27 snub-nose to my relative -- should have gifted one of my Glocks -- oh well.

I still have three left -- and they are staying with me. I am curious as to the age of each -- got them used.

19-4 with 4" barrel -- I think it is unfired. 4 0K9 035

27-2 with 5" barrel -- N478449 -- shot some by me and the family members -- but still looks new

27-2 with 8 3/8" barrel -- N184760 -- bought on Gunbroker as new-in-box. It looks clean, but it has the line around the cylinder. I just keep this one in safe.

If someone knows, how old are these pistols?

I also sold a 39-2 to a real nice fellow -- A449579 -- got it from the same person I got the 27-2 N478449 from. Pretty sure they are both un-fired after factory. He was pleased -- going to keep it as a safe queen. It would be nice to be able to tell him the vintage.

4 0K9 035 = SN's ran from 25K0001 in 1978 to 56K9999 in 1979.
N478449 = N4xxxxx ran from 1977 to 1978.
N184760 = 1973.

A449579 = SN's ran from A385001 in 1977 to A475000 in 1978.

The serial number is AFR6XXX

1984.

S&W model 39-2 nickel plate serial number A5639xx

1979.
Model 39 started production in 1954 as the first commercial 9mm double action auto in the US.
It became the model 39-2 in 1971 with the change to the smaller extractor with production continuing until 1982.

Thanks Dave and Jim. I really appreciate your nearly simultaneous responses. Now, should I continue to let the 19-4 and the 27-2 with 8 3/8" continue to be safe queens, or use them? On one hand, it is a shame to "age" them -- especially since I have another pretty much like them to shoot. On the other hand, they are tools meant to be shot. Either way, they will not be leaving me. I noticed that in the last number of years, the Model 27's are really going up in value.

Well, I'll tell you what. I have a pristine model 52 from the first year of production (1961) with original box, paperwork, etc. It has been sitting in the safe for a long time. I have pondered whether or not to shoot it because finding another in mint condition is unlikely. But you know what, sitting in the safe does it nor me any good. Next shooting session I'm taking it out and doing what it was designed for.... shooting!

Hello; I am not a gun person, I was when I was a kid, used to hunt, and LOVED it, but I got into using a Canon (camera). Anyway since I am not a gun person I will most likely step on some guidelines, hope not.

Me and some friends are refurbishing an old house left abandon. It has stayed in the same family since it was built. In the course of time, all that lived and died there left their stuff. Well some other friends of ours got evicted from their rental due to landlord wanting to live in the house. So we are fixing up this house for them at no cost to them.

Anyway I am over selling all the "good" stuff and today we found a gun. I have been searching and searching, but to no avail. I intend to take this gun to a large pawn shop tomorrow. We are selling the stuff to raise the funds to do the repairs. (TMI?) Anyway I would be very grateful if I could get some help in knowing when this gun was made and what it might be worth. The Serial# is 483068 it is a S&W 5 shot double action revolver. It has some time wear in it but the chamber still has real nice movement and it still will open to load. (I would not try firing it) I was also wondering what caliber it was as well.

1973 - 1974 numbers were from D510001 to D659901. Probably a model 10, model number would be on frame beneath barrel, visible when cylinder is swung out.

Dates to April or May 1989. Model number should be visible as noted above, most likely a model 37 or 38. The silver piece is most likely a Tyler grip adapter.

Sorry, not sure what is meant by S&S Special.

The Serial# is 483068 it is a S&W 5 shot double action revolver.

Not much to go on, I'm guessing it is a break top (barrel tilts down for loading/unloading) with external hammer. The s/n falls within the range for the .38 Double Action 4th Model which was made 1895 - 1909. Cartridge is .38 S&W which is slightly larger in diameter but shorter than the .38 Special. Done enough guessing already so I won't make a guess as to value.

The J tells me they are the small "J" frame "Chiefs Special". As for the model number I would need to know the caliber.
