Hastings 32" barrel....EXTENSION ?

What in blue hell is this thing all about? Its in Cabelas fall 02 master catalog. Am I the only one that thinks 5ft of barrel on a shotgun is dumb as a box of rocks? One thing for a muzzle loader, thats how they used to be.

Its fully ported, supposed to reduce report by up to 50%, doesn't the huge drop in pressure while the load still has another 30" of barrel to go through kill velocity?

Claims 85% patterns at 40 yards with no choke tube. That does sound good for some really limited applications but I don't see how it can outweigh carryin a damn gun around thats almost as tall as me. Hell I have trouble maneuvering myself around. If I took it huntin I'd wrap the damn thing around a tree first shot I tried to take. An you don't want 85% patterns at 40 yards on a skeet/trap range. HD makes a good excuse for less noise, but you aren't takin 40 yard shots an I'd be somersaultin over the thing soon as I tried to walk through a doorway.

So what the hell is it for? Obviously not a redneck like me

I saw that. Left me puzzled too.
I spose on those days when the ducks are really coming in nice over the decoys you could just swat 'em down and save that expensive shot.
I'll place it in the non-essential hardware catagory.

making a shotgun quieter for pest extermination would be nice.
sometimes a 22 rifle isn't quite the best thing to use, depending on area.

of course, it must look pretty neat in "trophy" photos to have a barrel that long
maybe longer shells (from 2.75 & 3 inch to 3.5 inch) wasn't "new and improved" enough for gunshop commandos

I want one anyway, just because
all that porting must be fun to clean

It's got me scratching my head too, guys. I just cannot see a use for it. And despite the hype in the catalog, addding a lb to the front end of a shotgun will seriously affect handling....

OK Now you guys had me digging the Cabela's catalog out of the recycle bag.

Could not find the barrel or "Extension", must have the wrong issue

Is this an extension to be screwed onto an existing barrel like a choke tube?

If so you will probably require some type of support for the barrel. Market hunters used loooong barrels when they were legal. Mounted the guns on boats.

I a bout of stupidity I bought a 30" bbl for my 870 a few years ago. The gun handles absolutely horribly with the barrel mounted. Too much weight up front ( Anybody want to buy a slightly used 30" barrel for an 870 express

)

Some manufacturers make exended choke tubes (up to 4") to convert sporting clays guns to Trap guns. Apparently they work for some people. Some Trapshooters like 34" barrels!

Master Catalog Fall 2002, page 534, in the middle

Its a 32" extension that you screw into your existing barrel. So if you have a 28 " to begin with your right at 5ft of barrel add in the length of the action and the stock and your over 6 feet. Theres no support for it, they say it only weighs 1.1 lbs and doesn't effect the swing of the gun.

You can put choke tubes in it too, how much will a turkey choke tighten patterns on a barrel thats shooting 85%? Sounds like you'd have a slug gun.

Only use I see is it might be fun slingin it over your shoulder an walkin around knockin people over at the range

I actually think that I know what this is for. I read an article one time (or I may have seen this on a show- I don't really recall) about crow hunting. In order to suppress the noise of the shotguns he was using, the author made a similarly ridiculous barrel extention. He claimed that it was a legal way to effectively "silence" the noise of the muzzle blast.

If this thing is just a specialized tool for winged varmints, maybe it has some degree of merit. Personally, I'd rather shoot less crows.

Does that thing screw into the existing choke tubes? If it does, how likely would it be to bugger the threads should something happen to the barrel, ie dropping it or bumping into something.

I used to live in a suburb of Minneapolis/St. Paul Minnesota. Up there they have so many geese that they allow Canada goose hunting in certain locations inside of the metro area. There are certain locations next to metro area ponds and fields where you can goose hunt in late August and early September.

The metro extension greatly reduces the report of the shotgun blast, as to not upset people who live in large homes and drive luxury SUVs that are NEVER taken off road. Seriously, anyone who wants to buy a used Grand Cherokee should look in car lots in the affluent suburbs. I may have hauled some pre-cut firewood, maybe.

The neat thing about it is after some DNR sponsored goose round-ups, they cook and can the goose meat and donate it to food shelves for the needy.
