Mauser: Which one?

J&G has Yugo 24/47's for cheap, I really might buy one but for a bit more I could nab a K98...

This is for collection, shooting, and probably pegging deer from my back door.

I can't really see any valid reason to pay more for a German one other than it being a collector thing, but since these Yugo's came up I've got a "hmmm..." going on.

I know the action is a bit shorter on the Yugos and the bolts are different, etc...

What would you buy?

the 24/47 is a great rifle for the money i've had mine for years shoots great and looks great to.

its a shame 8 mm mauser ammo isn't as cheap as it used to be

I'd suggest either a Czech or Yugo Mauser, simply because they're the same rifle as the K98 but cheaper and more available. They just don't have that "Wehrmacht appeal" that the K98 does.

i got a yugo 24/47 for 160$ off gunbroker. the reason i got this one was because it had the bolt bent. it grouped 10 shots at 5-1/2 at 100yds.
i think a yugo mauser will be more than enough for what your looking for
theres a 2-3/4" 12 ga. shell for size reference

But it is just as cheap to reload as any comparable round!

I love LOVE my Czech VZ24 mauser. I got it on Gunbroker with probably 90% finish and intact rampant lion crest for under $200. I wanted and would still like a German mauser, but I just didn't want to pay that much more for one at the moment. You can't go wrong with the Czech in my opinion. Its VERY well made.

It depends on what you want to do with it. If you want a shooter, the yugo will probably give you a much better chance at having a nice shiny and smooth bore. The 24/47s will never really be collectors. I don't think any of them (and if I'm wrong it had to be very few of them) saw any kind of combat, and most of them were never issued. Any K98 you find for < $300 will be a russian capture that's more than likely been rode hard and put away wet. There's a reasonable chance the bore will be less than stellar. It will have some collectors value since it's seen combat though.

My personal opinion, the yugo will probably be the much better shooter. Mine will shoot 2 moa with surplus. Not every group, but some of them hit in there. I also have an american captured K98 that is unaltered (swastikas and all). The years haven't exactly been kind to it (mostly from lack of lube during storage), but it's still in serviceable shape. The yugo shoots better, but I would let go of it 7 times before I let go of the K98. It really depends on what you're looking for in a rifle though. If you want a shooter, go with a yugo. If history is required, go with the k98.
