Besides a range, where can I shoot my firearms in NC?

I live in the Greensboro area. I would like to find a place other than a range to shoot...some park land or something. I don't know anything about hunting but I figure it might be ok wherever hunting takes place. Mainly I want to practice with my shotgun and the closest range that allows shotguns is not convient to me.

Elite,

Being that deer season is either in or about to be in . You'll likely upset some people if you go out in the woods and just start blasting.
Also if you get caught in the woods with a gun that is not correct for the season and with no license the game warden would love you hunting or not.

Elite dog,

Follow this link for a map of available ranges in NC:

http://www.ncwildlife.org/pg04_HuntingTrapping/ncsr/

If you are on private land with the landowner's permission (outside of city limits, of course) you may shoot all you want. You can't just go out target practicing in the woods in state parks, etc, anymore, please don't even think about it, you'll get a ticket or worse. If you are wanting to shoot anything besides paper targets, you'll need to find a friend with some land, most ranges are pretty restrictive.

Good luck, I've found in the past people who don't shoot themselves (I mean that aren't shooters) start getting weird when you shoot anything other than a .22 rimfire on their land.

Places to shoot like we used to as kids are getting harder and harder to come by now, I grew up in NC but now live in GA, even here it's tough to find a place to shoot. You can hunt on Wildlife Management Areas here, but not target shoot.

Check out www.carolinashootersforum.com for some cool local guys and info.

I used to go to the outdoor range at Uwharrie National Forest quite a bit when I lived up there. You can shoot anything you want there.

Uwharrie is likely your best bet unless you want to join one of the local gun clubs.

I'd recommend National Forest land -- I used to shoot there in NC when I lived there, and I shoot in the NF in Idaho where I live now. It's free, no distractions, and you get to shoot with pleasant surroundings ... can't beat it.

The one thing you need to look out for is that most states have laws that designate how far you have to be from roads/campsites/areas-with-fat-tourists-in-RVs to shoot legally -- check the laws for your NC, it's been too many years for me to be sure (I think I remember 100 yards from campsites/roads, and no firing across roads/campsites ... but don't hold me to it). Maybe call a ranger station to find out the laws for the forest you'll be shooting in.

Also be sure to check out the laws regarding *transporting* your firearms on National land ...

Hope that was helpful.

Oh yeah, and pick up your freakin' brass and targets before you leave, and don't be slinging lead into other people's streams -- some of us still drink out of em'.
