I live in Elk country. I understand that there are cougars in the area, and that people have seen tracks where the cats are stalking people.
In fact, the Oregon Wildlife Dept is *currently* undertaking a program to kill/cull some of the pumas, to get the elk population back up - the cats are taking too many elk fawns.

Cougars are curious critters. A sizable bunch of us had a wake/party as a sendoff for a local who'd died. Campfire, beer, music until around two AM. Two or three guys just slept on the ground after the party broke up. A musician who'd driven to the party with his guitars drove the 400 or so yards home. He went back the next morning to help with cleanup.

Lion tracks in his tire tracks, less than a hundred yards from the party site.
