Problem with a High Standard HD military
I bought one of these today and it appears to be nearly perfect. It was a little dirty, so I removed the grips and half slide, then cleaned it. After re-assembly I can't seem to get the (take down lever?) to move up fully into postion and the slide doesn't want to spring foward when cocking/loading. Any idea what I'm doing wrong.

The recoil spring got loose on you..remove the slide, put it upside down in a padded vise, push the recoil spring to the rear till it catchs on the lock, try not to touch the top of the lock button when putting it back on the frame or you`ll release the spring again..........

When disassembling the pistol, retract the slide and hold down the little button on top of the slide while releasing the slide slowly. The slide should then be free of recoil spring tension. Use the dismount button to retract the slide block and remove the slide to the rear. Unless necessary, do not release the recoil spring lock.
If you do release the spring lock, you will have to compress the spring with a small screwdriver or similar implement, then set the lock by pushing the button. When reassembling, retract the slide block, replace the slide on its rails, and release the slide block. Then pull the slide back and release it, which will release the recoil spring lock and allow the gun to function normally. Jim |

Jim: Thanks for the info. I did finally figure out how to take it down and put it back together but not before slightly crimping the spring (drat!).
I second that on the manual. Is anyone familiar with Jim Spacek and his book on High Standards? http://users.ntplx.net/~tm/jspacek/FRNTPAGE.HTM I sold my Supermatic Citation a few years ago, so it's good to have a HS in the cabinet again!

Hi, ATTICUS and guys,
High standard parts are available from www.gunpartscorp.com You might try them for the recoil spring and any other parts. BTW, if you should encounter one, the Colt Woodsman has the same recoil spring lock set up, except that after the spring is locked, the rear of the grip is snapped up and out; its top is the slide block. Re-assembly of the Woodsman is a bit like the Ruger, though easier. Jim Last edited by James K; September 4, 2001 at 11:43 AM. |

Jim: That link tells me I'm "not authorized". Do they have a new URL or name maybe?

Hi, ATTICUS,
Sorry, the period is supposed to end the sentence; it is not part of the URL. I will edit the post, and you can try without the period. Jim |

Thanks Sam. That's a good site. I had forgotten about Gordon Elliot. He helped me out with some parts about 10 years ago.
