Outers

As I was cleaning my Glock 26 today I grabbed my box of cleaners and stumbled upon some outers bore cleaner and oil and couldn't help but think to myself that gun lubricants have come along way! My question to you is, with all the lubes out there, is there any outers fans still?

I'm currently using Hoppe's #9. I will try to find some Outer's to compare. The distinctive smells are powerful memory triggers. I will use it on an old 22 rifle and for a little while, I will feel like 16 again.

I have tried tons of products....most seem to work: haven't run into anything that is a miracle cleaner.

I've had pretty good luck with Sweet's 7.62, and another product called RB17.

I like the RB17 because it's water soluble, and has a pleasant pine odor.

I've used Hoppe's #9 for full cleaning since I was a kid. I also use the Hoppe's oil for certain jobs. As mentioned above, that distinct smell always brings back great old memories. I use TW25B as a lubricant for rails on any of my semi-autos.

I do grab the Outers Silicon/cleaner cloths if I see them. They tend to be fairly cheap and I will keep several in my gun bag. Even if I don't fully clean a handgun after shooting, I will at least wipe it down thoroughly with the Outers cloth...and I also will use them on occasion just to tidy up a gun that has been sitting for awhile. It makes the finish on SIG's look really nice.

I typically use either break free or hoppes9 but after seeing the outers in my garage I had to use it. It was a blast from the past I gotta say

Even back in the "old days" when Outer's and Hoppe's were about all that was available, Hoppe's always seemed to give better results.

It was basically their solvent that was, out necessity due to patents, different from Hoppe's, and generally less effective.

Unfortunately, sometime during the 70s, Hoppe's was required to remove one of the more efficient ingredients due to EPA requirements (or so I have read and been told) that also made it less effective.

Outer's Gunslick works great on rotating bolt design weapons. I used it for an M1 Carbine once and it was great.

So I assume it's not produced anymore?

Alternatively, you could scour the neighborhood yard sales and look for an old Outer's cleaning kit that still has a tube of the grease for a buck or two.

Sweet! Thanks. I always liked grease more than oil, I use RIG on my K-31 because I find it similar to the original Waffenfett. I have some of the Automatenfett but don't want to use it. I plan to order a tube of this or look for one locally. Really good stuff.

Used Outers many, many years ago when I was a kid. That was before I learned to love the smell of Hoppes #9. Hoppes was much better. Now I use MPro 7 most of the time because my wife isn't fond of Hoppes, odor. Find both MPro and Hoppes work equally well.

One year at Camp Perry I decided to ask every person I met which Bore Cleaner they used and why.. At first I was surprised there were so many Bore Cleaners I had never heard of. Some guys really got into the pros and cons of the different solvents but overwhelmingly the response was Hoppes because they liked the smell.
