When testing trigger action on a BP revolver....

....is it best to remove the nipples from the cylinder or remove the cylinder from the revolver? Or perhaps it does not matter.

IMHO - remove the nipples. The cylinder is an integral part of the action on a single action revolver. It may impose a load on the bolt, and thus on the trigger/bolt spring and the hammer as well. The loads on the trigger and hammer are what determine the 'feel' of the sear.

Dry firing the gun without nipples will not result in damage to the hammer or frame unless either is already faulty (incomplete or incorrect heat treatment/hardening).

Hello, Doc Hoy. When at gun shows, or stores, I hold hammer with off hand thumb & pull trigger, gives you a good idea of pull without that sharp "Snap" that seems to turn heads your way.

BTW, I just received a cylinder and barrel from Old Western Scrounger and I was able to remove the nipples with only a little problem. Had to use the jig and vice on on of them. The rest came out with just a little force on the nipple wrench.
