Cabela's 1858 New Army Target

Hi Guy's, first time post so be easy on me

Been thinking real hard on getting a black power revolver. I been shooting and reloading for revolvers for years,what's your opinion on the Cabela's 1858 New Army Target? Are the adjustable rear sights any good? I got to look at a Tradition 1858 New Army and a Tradition 1860 today at Gander Mountain and wonder if the rear sight is worth the extra cost. By the way this is a nice site, I imagine you guys will help me spend my money

I need all the help on the do's and don'ts

I can't recall hearing anything bad about the sights. They don't appeal to me tho. Adjustable sights just don't belong on a SA.

Hawg, adjustable sites are very much a part of SA. Mine is a small flat bastard. Works wonders on those high shooting Remmys.

only complaint I have isthey tend to hang up in most holsters.

I used to think like you Hawg, but then I got a hold of a Ruger.

I have 2 BP singles with adjustable sights, amongst all my various single actions, and I wouldn't trade them for anything. Doesn't mean I want to compete with them, but when I go out hunting I like to know that I don't have to whip out my Kentucky windage chart for a 35-40 yard shot.

As for Cabelas 1858 targets. I used to have a 8 inch, used it for years and loved it. Then got a great deal trading it and some parts for a 12 inch stainless with the target sights that was brand spankin new. Those sights make it real nice to dial in for any particular load. The one thing those sights needs is a little locktite (not the coldweld stuff, you still want to be able to move the screw) because the windage screw CAN come loose. I caught mine about 2 rounds before I lost it.

The biggest pain is that the front ramps on the remingtons catch in the holsters. I took a tiny file and rounded over all my edges on the blade, so it wouldn't cut right through the leather.

The rear sight on the Cabela's 1858 New Army Target is actually a pretty nice sight. The frame is nicely rounded and the blade sets low in the frame and is rounded also, so it shouldn't hang in a holster. The hammer gives them some protection. The windage adjustment is a little finicky, It uses very small slotted set screws on either side of the blade. They well come loose if you don't use some sort of thread locker.
Fixed sights are more period correct, but I don't shoot BP to be period correct. Out of two dozen BP revolvers the 1858 target and ROA are the only adjustable sights I have. Tight groups are nice, tight groups dead center are nicer.

Darn good advise. I ended up putting a small bevel on the front sight of my 1858.

Go get that Rem of your choice ... I have one Pietta Rem, and two ROA Horse pistols with adjustable sites that I would take a challange of most out of 5 Milk Jugs or Bean cans first @100 yards again' a fixed site one :O)
I like both...I jus' like old school a lil' more:O)

I jus' like both the authentic and repro's with a twist of sumfin that may or could have been done back in the 19th Century.
So sights are sites are sights.
I have seen original Rems with sites mounted, ect...
So I'll have to confess to acceptin' faux ivory, bone, grips ect, Dropin conversions, and adjustable sights on Rems & rifles, Clyinder loaders...
But I WON'T COMPROMISE MY BLACK POWDER USE ...... NO SUBS!

Apparently I am. I'm a traditionalist. I like old things the way they were intended and I voice my opinion on it. Nah, Pahoo ain't gettin rid of me that easy.

MY guns don't need adjustable sights anyway. Most of them shoot to point of aim and the ones that don't I know where to aim to put them on the money.

Got a chance to shoot this morning, 24 degrees and a 25 mph NW wind

I only shot 12 rounds, I used 25 grs. of Goex FFFg and 20 grs. of corn meal a Hornady .451" and .454" round ball and butter flavor Crisco. I'm blessed to have a back yard range, I only shot at 15 yrds (see if I could the target) standing with a rested two handed hold. I had 1.5"-2.0" groups under the conditions I was happy

Took a while to figure out how much corn meal to put in. One time I put too much in ( found out after trying to seat the ball ) and cound not get the ball seated down far enought. Took the cylinder out and used the trusted Buck jack knife shaved the top of the ball off

Had good results with CCI #10 caps, they went bang and stayed on. Took it a part clean it with soap and water and layed it on top of the wood furnace to dry. Got to go and put back together and lube it up go to work.
What do you use for a capper on a revolver, besides your fingers?

I use a snail capper and at times a tube capper. Not sure if you can still get the tube cappers but the snail type are still avaiable. Go to Dixie or Cain Outdoors and they carry what you need.
