I shoot .45 acp in USPSA competition through both my SW 625 revolvers and my CZ 97b. I look for 850 fps with 200gr lead bullets and around 750 fps with 225-230gr lead bullets to make power factor.
My favorite powers are: 230gr: Vithavouri N-310 - a fast single base powder that is very clean and accurate. Hodgdon Clays - fast double-base powder, smokes more than N-310 and doesn't meter quite as well. 200gr Winchester Super Target - a superb powder for lead bullets. Low smoke, accurate, clean, meters well. Vithavouri N-320 A medium-fast single base powder. Alliant American Select. A fast double base flake shotgun powder with only 2% nitroglycerine that has given good results with 200gr lead bullets in my revolvers. I'm also trying some Solo 1000 but haven't worked up a good load yet. I suggest trying some of these modern powders in addition to the old standbys like Unique, 231, Bullseye, etc. You may be pleased to find out about recent advances in powder technologies. Chris |

.45 ACP Powder, Anyone???
I like Accurate Arms #5. Designed around the .45 ACP. Out of a Lyman #55 Powder Measure, it Meters like a Dream. It's consistent and clean burning. And even better yet, it's in most of the Reloading Manuals out there. What more can an American/GunNutt ask for???

.45ACP Powder Selection (almost ANY pistol/shotgun powder)
.45 ACP:
Target loads: AA2, 231/HP38. Others swear by Bullseye (THE original .45ACP powder), TiteGroup, Clays, WST, and N310. I have NOT had good results with those in any of my .45s, but YMMV. Actually, for light target loads, any fast powder will work: Accurate Nitro 100, Alliant Bullseye, Accurate Solo 1000, Alliant Red Dot, Hodgdon Titegroup, Accurate No. 2, Alliant American Select, Hodgdon Clays, Vihta Vuori N320, Ramshot Competition, Winchester WST, 231/HP38 Mil Spec Hardball: Power Pistol, Unique, and Action Pistol. Powders to look at would be: Accurate No. 5 Winchester WSL Alliant Unique Hodgdon Univ. Clays Alliant Power Pistol IMR SR-7625 Hodgdon HS-6 Ramshot Silhouette (was WAP) Vihta Vuori N340 |
