I know that these are used by search engines, though I'm not certain how. Zach set ours up more than two years ago. As we're about to resubmit to the search engines, I thought I might get some help in reviewing what we have here:
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR><META NAME="DESCRIPTION" CONTENT="All about firearms -- the first virtual online community of it's kind. Forums provide a new medium for advancing the principles of responsible firearms ownership."><META NAME="KEYWORDS" CONTENT="auto,handgun,handguns,legal,amend,amendment,safety,shotgun,shotguns ,rifle,rifles,bill of rights,pistol,pistols,range,gun range,gun ranges,shoot,shooting,shooting range,arms,hunt,hunts,hunting,competition,shooting competition,bullet,bullets,pump,bolt,action,bolt action,semi,semi-automatic,Winchester,S&W,buy,sell,trade,carbine,carbines,gl ock,9mm,bayonet,revolver,revolvers,weapon,gun,guns,ammo,ammunition,target"><META NAME="REVISIT-AFTER" CONTENT="30 days"><META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="ALL"> [/quote] [This message has been edited by Rich Lucibella (edited October 21, 2000).] |

Some search engines will only list up to so many key words. So the first, say, 20 or 30 should be judiciously chosen to be the most useful.
You might consider losing the singular vs plural versions and getting more variety, like, "... 1911, Govt, model, gunsmith, barrel, sights, optics, trigger, forums, trajectory, slide, sling, mounts..." You get the idea. Of course, it wouldn't hurt to repeat "... 1911, Govt, model, ..." a few more times ... |

Thanks sensop.
I'll take a stab at it in the next few days and put it back up for review. Rich |

I've got a better idea. I'll visit some sites and get a list of key words together for YOUR review. The list is pretty good now. Just needs some tweakin'.

Thanks, Sensop. I was getting that "overwhelmed" feeling. You always seem to be there for us when that happens!

Rich,
Just glancing at the forum titles, did you want to include something about the Close Quarters Combat subjects? How about: cowboy, western, reloading? And will "gun" pick up "gunsmithing"? On some sites the list of META tags is visible (none I can find at the moment) and those tags take up half a page or more (in FINE PRINT!). Wonder what quantity limits may exist? For which (or all) search engines? [This message has been edited by Dennis (edited October 23, 2000).] |

Rich,
I stumbled around www.Google.com for a while looking for anything about META tags. Found nothing. However, I found the following on one of their “help” pages. I have NO idea if this pertains also to META tags or to other search engines. http://www.google.com/help/basics.html Stemming To provide the most accurate results, Google does not use "stemming" or support "wildcard" searches. In other words, Google searches for exactly the words that you enter in the search box. Searching for "googl" or "googl*" will not yield "googler" or "googlin." If in doubt, try both forms: "airline" and "airlines," for instance. Does capitalization matter? Google searches are not case sensitive. All letters, regardless of how you type them, will be understood as lower case. For example, searches for "george washington", "George Washington", and "gEoRgE wAsHiNgToN" will all return the same results. ============================ Then I searched on the keyword META (on Google). There is a shipload..... Among them are: - META Tagging for Search Engines http://wdvl.internet.com/Location/Meta/Tag.html (This looks good! I think they’re speaking English and, during daylight hours, I might have understood some of it!) - How To Use HTML Meta Tags http://searchenginewatch.com/webmasters/meta.html (This looks promising for a computer person to evaluate! I fell asleep...) - Internet Resources Meta-Index This document is intended to be a loosely categorized meta-index of the various resource directories and indices available on the Internet. Please send suggestions for new entries on this list (any index or directory of resources) to [email protected]. http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/SDG/Softwar...MetaIndex.html (I understood nothing here! Therefore it might be of help to you as a computer expert. Put me to sleep quicker than Dan Rather does...) - Search Engine Tutorial http://www.northernwebs.com/set/setsimjr.html (Some info but it looked to me like an ad for their product. But this might help you. I snored...) =================== In my ignorance, all this is merely a sure cure for insominia! However, perhaps this post will induce some bright computer expert to help you. :crossed fingers: |

Good resources, Dennis.
It looks like our Meta Description Tag is utilizing 81% of the normally available space for that purpose, which is acceptable. The Keyword tag field is only used at about 45%, so we can easily double the size of that. ***************** Check email. ****************** Dennis, 'you call me a computer expert one more time and I'll find your home address and give it to Coinneach ... Good deal. Thanks Dennis. Thanks Sensop.
I've ordered the full copy of MetaMedic. That should help us with the final tweak. Rich |
