bullseye powder

Hi all I'm new to this forum so here goes-getting back into reloading pistol ammo. .38 sp using Winchester small standard poistol primers-with western navada hard cast bullets -148 gr wc or 158 gr swc. i was thinking 4.0 gr bullseye . but i just can't find any info on this combo.anyone out there that has any thoughts on this ? thanks. deleterman.

That's over max for either of those bullet weights. Standard target load for the 148 is 2.7 grains of Bullseye, and the 158 shoots closer to 3.5. Alliant lists their load data on their website, and has info for both of these weights. You can look at their data here: http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/index.aspx

I've been shooting a lot of .38 Special ammo that I've loaded using 158 gr SWC with 3.4 gr Bullseye. FWIW, also have been shooting a lot of .357 using 158 gr SWC with 6.2 gr Bullseye.

Many years ago the standard factory loading was 3.7 grains of Bullseye and a 158 RNL. The reloading data for bullseye powder on their web site and 38 special shows 3.6 grains with 15500 flbs and 3.8 for 17200 flbs for +P. Standard Sammi specs for the standard 38 is 17000 and 18500 for +p. I use 3.7 in my older Colts Cobra and Agents with 158 SWCHP from speer and I open up the hollow point. For target work I use 3.5 Bullseye and the 158RNL. For many years 2.7, 2.8 or 3.0 were standard for the 148 FWC round all target loads. Clocked 3.8 out of a snubby S&W at about 735 and 3.7 at about 725 with 158 SWC bullet. I open the hollow point up with a punch and this round does open up at these velocities and penetrates extremely well. Hard to find good standard velocity loads today. I also use Nyclad 125 Chief loads. If you pull a bullet from a new remington 158 round nose lead bullet you will find 3.5 grains of powder which looks just like Bullseye.

Chamber pressure is measured in pounds per square inch (PSI) or copper units of pressure (CUP), muzzle energy is measured in foot-pounds. But something that generated 15,000 ft/lbs of muzzle energy would sure be interesting to shoot. I think I remember reading that the 700 Nitro Express tops out around 13,000 ft/lbs when pushing a 1000 grain bullet close to 2400 fps.

SCOV509 you are absolutely correct, I believe it is PSI. It was late, good catch. Anyway I think he got the message. Times have sure changed most of the newer loading data has dropped from where it use to be, liability I guess.
