Actually, this year I'm using PTO for the whole elk hunt, so I'm getting paid to hunt

Actually most national forest land is open to hunting, be it Texas or otherwise.

just ask a few guys from texas what they pay

Alot!! It just keeps getting worse for me. I have two boys that love to hunt as much as I do so when ever I buy something I have to buy two extra for them. But when it is all said and done I would pay even more if need be to have the great fun I have with my boys. My 15 year old still can't wait to go out with his old man to hunt. That is PRICELESS!!

I've tried the "deer are smarter this year" approach. I'd go out and buy $200 worth of camo and another $100 in cover scents and estrus scents and calls and gone out at 2 in the morning and sat until the sun began to rise and snuck out and got to my spot and waited until noon and walking back find guys that just drove up with they windows down on their diesel trucks while smoking and just jumped out and shot a 5x5 buck. since then I've done the reasonable thing...wash my clothes the night before, get out there just as the sun is coming up and just walk around till I find something and shoot. deer are not getting smarter...people are just buying into all of the new stuff that's on the market
