plastic colt trainer pistols - us navy

My father's uncle was a provost marshall during WWII. He gave my father these two plastic pistols. We've never seen any like them or found any information on them. I finally got around to photographing one of them this weekend. Any information would be appreciated.

Plastic Colts

I am not sure what the Navy used these for, but the Army used them as training aids. If your training objective was to seize and secure a small village, part of the senario was to search the area and any detainies for weapons. A plastic .45 or a plastic rifle could be hidden and left unobserved/unguarded, That was not something you would want to do with a real firearm.
