Before I would truss a shotgun for home defense, I would have to shoot a score of 99 on the skeet range, and 90 on the trap range. In other words, the gun type is unimportant, but practice is paramount...

Is there any special marking on the 590A1? My 590 has no A1 mark, but has the metal trigger guard and holds 9. I believe the safety IS plastic, however.

Meh....
My oldest Mossberg is about 25 years old now. I shot abot 100 rounds through it on Tuesday (and about 400 other rounds ). I've never had or seen a problem with the Mossberg safety with one exception. I saw a screwed up safety after a guy tried to put a folding stock on one. The bolt supplied with the stock was too long and it chinga'ed the inside part of the safety. Anyway, the best shotgun is whatever you have. Training is the key and is frankly FAR more important than the type of gun. I've seen some of you counterstrike ninja's at the range. Even though you have expensive guns, you still don't know sh%@%$ about shooting. |

I have the Mossberg 500 with a 18 1/2" barrel, I feel fine with 5 rounds in the tube, but more rounds with the 590 can't hurt.

first post so forgive my noobiness.
Ditto everyone else, learn to shoot whatever you choose to employ. I own mossbergs, benellis, and a reminigton, and of all of them, I love my Stoeger double side by side with synthetic furniture, light rail, and dual triggers. I'm not the tallest guy in the world (5'5") and this gun points great, is easy to maneuver and is trim. The length of pull is nice as well, a lot like a youth model 870. It is also not finicky at all when it comes to ammo. Dual triggers means, if one breaks I still have a good single shot. Very few parts to worry about. Plus it looks hillbilly-tactical, which is the look I'm going for. |

As has been stated: weak link is almost never the gun it's the shooter. Get a good gun and train. I like the mossy 590

For me, the selection is based on where you are think the safety should be. 500/590 tang mount, 870 on trigger guard. Not sure about the others. I like the 590 position because it is ambidextrous. Does not matter as much for my competition shotgun, but I want the house gun to be ambi.

What is a tactical shotgun? Never seen one my self...
Tactical is a behavior some animals and humans commit to and others do not... Brent Last edited by hogdogs; December 10, 2010 at 01:53 PM. |

How come no one has mentioned the Benelli M4? Isnt that the shotgun used by the military, and therefore "tactical?"

These were also used heavily in every dept. of defense office as well in the offices and tents of even the most highly trained sniper outfits but have never heard them referred to as neither tactical nor sniper pens... Brent |

Nice Tactical Pens!
Hey Brent, those are some awesome tactical sniper pens! I definitely want one for home defense. Few questions:

best tactical shotgun
moss 590 a1 hands down, robust barrel, ported, comes with beyonet, ghost ring sites, I know the 870 comes with a steal receiver but sometimes a slug can get caught when racking

I just got a Mossberg 930 SPX for Christmas, as I wanted to go the semi-auto route. I'll know more after Christmas, but this has the potential to be a perfect HD shotgun for me. A tad costly at $589, but it will be worth it I'm sure. A review below.

I've got a Mossberg M590A1, 20", 8+1, ghost ring sights. Love it. Always goes bang. Easy to run & the controls are more intuitive for me, than the 870.
I don't like synthetic stocks & since the LoP was too long for me, I ordered an older style wood stock set from Havlins, cut 1 1/2" off the stock & put on a Limbsaver pad. Perfection. It's my under the bed gun & goes deer hunting with me when I know we'll be man-driving or using dogs. |
