The Senate Committee on the Judiciary has scheduled a hearing entitled "Firearms in Commerce: Assessing the Need for Reform in the Federal Regulatory Process" for Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in Room 226 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

By order of the Chairman.

Can't find anything online about it except lot's of people speculating the Administration is going after guns. I don't know.

It may be a review of S. 941, which aims to reform some of the policies and procedures of the BATFE. Earlier versions passed by a comfortable majority in the House in two previous terms, but didn't make it in the Senate.

If not, I've got no idea as of yet. I sincerely doubt they'd be dumb enough to try and introduce new restrictions two months before the mid-terms. Then again, folks do some pretty dumb stuff.

If it's true reform of the regulatory process, it could be a good thing.

If it's an attempt at new restrictions, it will fail to pass, and it will generate public outcry, which would also be a good thing.

ETA: a Google search on the matter reveals nothing of substance, only the announcement of hearings. That doesn't seemed to have stopped a great deal of panic and sky-is-falling rhetoric, though.

That makes sense. That bill is still in committee. If that's the case it's a good thing.

It's an NRA sponsored bill to help clean up some of the problems with BATFE procedures and policies. Info here:

I just spoke with a member of the Judiciary Committee staff. She said while S. 941 , "BATFE Reform and Firearms Modernization Act of 2009", may be on the agenda, the hearings are not limited to that. The impression I got from her was that the Senators could go in any direction they want in the hearings.

Therefore, you could have stuff on S. 941 (and Pat Leahy is a co-sponsor) as well as the "gun show loophole" (sic) or anything else.

I have an email into the Committee press secretary for more info.

Yeah, they do that. Inexplicably, our elected so-called "representatives" have a way of listening to anyone and everyone but us. Obvious solution to the problem: fire them all and start fresh.

I'm sure the "gun show loophole" will come up from certain participants. It comes up all the time. The real question will be, "what can we pass that won't blow up in our faces come November?"

I have high hopes for S. 941. I spoke with a couple of ATF agents regarding their thoughts on it, and apparently the Bureau is behind it as well, as it stands to make certain aspects of their job easier.
