Each weapon is a beast unto it's self.

Check your loading books, paper or online, for what ever you cartridge may be that lists any 55 grain bullets. This will give you a general set of listings for various powders, including H4895. Use these as a starting point to find what your weapon likes.

Bullets differ. Lead is soft, jackets are hard. Jacket thicknesses varies from one version to the next. In general, softer will give to pressures sooner. These are only generalities to take into consideration.

Load two or three rounds at or near the bottom and see how they work. Then go from there.

Be safe and enjoy,

OSOK

Do you have a Lyman 49th issue? That should tell you all you need to know about powders and max/min charge weights. As for my bolt 223, for a while I used Varget behind 55 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, at about 1 grain under max and it shot really well.

Hodgdon says 26 gr H4895 with 55 gr in 223.
You will be lucky to get that much to fit.

I have always had great luck on targets and on rodents with Vmax bullets.

CAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond currently published maximums for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The Firing Line, nor the staff of TFL assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information.

To get premature loose primer pockets, I would have to get 28.5 gr to fit, and I don't think can do it. If I fill a case up to the mouth and overflow, it measures 28.9 gr and no room for a bullet. It 26 gr to the base of the neck, maybe a little more will fit under the bullet.

I have been trying to squeeze IMR4895 into 223 under 55 gr Vmax for 12 years and it has always been kind of wimpy. Those holes in the target at 200 yards are considerably lower than the H335 groups.
