Mounting a scope, questions

My father has a Remy 700 bolt action which has front and rear steel sights. I'd like to get him a scope for this gun but I don't know anything about this. What kind of scope would work for this rifle and what other items might I need to buy to have the scope installed? Thank you.

The scope possibilities are endless. Your going to need a scope mount and rings. What does he want the scope for? Shooting 100 yards at targets, or shooting 500 yards at deer? You can mount just about any model scope that you want on the gun but it really comes down to how powerful of a scope he wants.

The purposes would be shooting 100 yards at targets. Are the scope mounts pretty much one size fits all and are they sold at the same place you'd buy the scope...probably, yes? What's a good scope for targets? I'd like something clear, works well with the Remy 700 and lasts. Thank you.

Mounts are specific to the rifle. In some cases mounts for some guns may work on another, but rarely. Any good gunshop should have mounts to fit your gun. The 700 is one of the most common guns so mounts are everywhere.

They are heavy, expensive, hard to mount and easy to shoot loose after a time. There are far better more modern options.

Scopes can be had anywhere between $60-$3000. As a rule most anything under $100 is a waste of money. The Nikon Prostaff @ around $150 is about the least expensive I'd recommend. In the $200 price range there are lots of options that I could happily use for any situation anywhere. Some good ones to consider.

I like the Burris best, followed by Redfield, but could be happy with any of these.

If you can afford more the sky is the limit, but very few people can really use any more quality than you would get from a $300-$400 scope.

You don't need anything more than a 3-9X40 scope. You can use low mounts with a 40mm lense and it will do anything you need doing. Bigger 50mm lenses just cost more, and require high mounts.

Target Shooting- 100 yards, I would go with nothing less than a 6-24 x 56. I have sighted others rifles in ( Deer Rifles ). A 3-9 x 40 at 100 yards, Heck I can see the target better with out the scope. Great deer scope, Poor Target scope.
Way to underpowered IMHO

If target shooting is new to you, I suggest picking up a $100 scope and make sure that you enjoy the hobby before you drop $500 plus for a good scope. My eye sight isn't the best but I can hit a quarter sized target at 100 yards with a Walmart special 3-9x40 scope. If you want a bigger scope you can buy a 6-18x50 bushnell banner on ebay for $120 shipped to your door. Most scopes require 1" rings, and some of the more expensive scopes have 30mm rings.
