good thread. If you ever need any help just holler.I am only a short drive away.

got a nice little .357 max contender (pistol 15" barrel) that is one shot pig medicine and has taken many hogs.

i hear ya on the worry about richocet, but your buddy has got to learn how to control his fire. A stray bullet can kill just as easily as a richocet and doesn't matter what type of bullet you are shooting.

Also, you might want to try the 45/70 444 or 450 for pigs. it is strong medicine in nifty lever actions especially with teh 18" barrels on the guide guns.

Yithian, great posts. I live in Austin and a friend and I are trying to get into 'rolling some hawgs'. He has a Finn-capture Mosin-Nagent that ought to be fearsomely accurate with a scope. How does one get into the hawg eradication circles? Last weekend we drove out to Taylor and Granger, TX and found Vincle Mares BBQ joint. A very interesting place with good sausage BBQ. Andrew and I are trying to figure out how to meet the landowners and how to demonstrate that we are not just 'city boys'.

Can you get close enough to the hawgs to use 12 ga slugs?

from my personal experiences in Oklahoma hog hunting you really don't have to worry about getting close to the hogs, instead you have to worry about the hogs getting close to you and tearing you up. Yes a 12 ga pump or semi- with slugs would be perfect for up close and out to the 100 yrd mark if ya got a rifled barrel and scope.

I wish there was a method for the public to take an active role, without damaging property.

Me? I work in a Sporting Goods Dept. at Walmart.
Guys come in complaining, and I offer to help and get phone numbers.
Most owners think of bad experiences with previous hunters, and opt out.
Sometimes, I can compare notes with owners. Sometimes I get to help out.

The guy with the lion problem came to see "the guy that helps out". (me)
I really should call him soon. Just to make sure it wasn't a heat of the moment complaint during our conversation.

You can get close to them if you can 'muddy up" your outline.
Camo or earth colors helps. Trees and bushes behind you helps more.
They hear very well but the nose is what a hunter fears.
If they are making noise, walking up on them is butter.

Thanks for the support guys.
For a while there, I was feeling quite down about myself while trying to explain.

From the link you just posted I assume you missed our point earlier...
Let me guess you shot your cat with a bow and arrow when you were 10.

Why so hostile JW62?

Someone asked if you could sneak up on them with a shotgun.
I linked a vid of someone walking up and kicking one.
That isn't me.
I would've shot it.

You want to know a good commercial for an assault weapon ban?
The video you are disseminating followed by someone saying "Can we really trust these people with military weapons."
Stop disseminating videos and stories of hunters/shooters looking like idiots and I won't be hostile.

Think about how many people we have to take to the range and introduce to shooting in order to counter the negative effects of a video like that?

I don't recommend stacking the prisoners naked in a pyramid, but if you are going to do it, at least have the common sense not to take pictures.

WOW!

The vid I linked to, the guy isn't even holding a firearm of any sort.
He just sneaks out and boots a feral pig in the butt.
He didn't want pork for dinner. Tho, he is an idiot, IMO.

I am thinking you see a different vid.

Edit: Never mind JW.
You worry about your neck of the woods, and I'll worry about mine.
I don't feel like being talked down to, from a hatter.
Thank the Mods for the ignore function.
You feel free to do the same with me.

Feral hogs in Texas are as big of a pest as rabbits in Australia. I don't much care how you kill them as long as they die somewhat quick - they're vermin, same as rats.

A bunch of feral hogs can leave a field or pasture looking like a drunk with a backhoe had been playing. I have seen rooted-in areas where rocks of forty or fifty pounds had been moved around.

All in all, I guess feral hogs are about the only animal for which I have no concern, from the standpoint of "hunter's ethics". They're right in there with screwworm flies, cockroaches and scorpions.

At least the hogs are edible, if a person wants to do the work.
