M855 Got 'em

Got a 1k loose, lake city green tip yesterday at the show.

Yeah, took them out to the range, my M193 was denting the steel plate well, about 1/2 to 2/3 penetration, but the M855 was cutting through it like putty...

They do what they say, and I got a great deal on this lot, enough to make the last thousand that I bought way high balance out as well.

I am now actually down around pre panic retail on average per round price!

How thick is that plate?!? The last photo makes it appear very thick.

NO doubt, that plate looks thick. I wasn't thinking 855 was capable. I had seen my copper washed 7.62 defeat some thick plate, but not the 855 so much....

Looks like fun anyhow. Might want to hang on to it until the storm blows over, if it does.............

.5" @ just < 100 yd, it was outrageously cool fun.
It disintegrated bricks as well, even an audible difference in the round from the .223 55gr I can only assume from the higher pressure and heavier round.

I will definitely be holding onto that bunch, and shooting up some more of that Federal AE first for range, after I divided the box out into individual 30 round bags and packed it into a real can, I just took the strays with me. (my 1k rounds actually came up to 978)

Already trading for > $1 per round in some arenas, I got it for WAY less than that. And as things are going, I could see it being on a hit list near term.

I wanted to go get some more plate and fire up half the case, but fought the urge.

I wish I had bought that lot of 855 in December for 40ยข per round. Been kicking myself ever since.

It is fun stuff, I had been looking for some for quite some time, had about given up.
Sure will be nice if/when this ammo drought ends and we can go back to normal prices.

Looked at a case of that for $420 before the current craziness...

Don't kick myself though. Only so much money to go around and I don't like to speculate.

Looks like good stuff.

They should be outlawed!!!!!!!!!!
No one should be able to own them.
We should only be allowed bows and arrows.

I am sure they will actually be outlawed soon.

I still have 250-350 of the Winchester white box 855, and 160 PMC X-Tac, but had bought a 420 round Federal XM855 can from Palmetto State Armory back in August. I don't shoot them much, I mainly shoot M193 but these are my back ups.. I just happened to buy them because they were on sale for $168 or $178 for the 420 round can on stripper clips.

I just hope demand and supply meet somewhere down the road...

I could see it being outlawed, be a hard press to say one needs to kill deer in light body armor or behind brick walls...

I have done some research, seems it is not the best anti tissue round because it tends to just go through, but it has its place, and that place if nothing else is a big spoonful of cool when you want it.

Super fun

I would buy another case @ $450, and probably shoot the whole thing at one trip to the range.

Makes me wish I could get hands on some M955, just to play with...
I would probably pay an outrageous price just to plink with it.

Still have a case (1,000 rds) of PMC X-Tac that I bought in November for $319.

For comparison here is a shot of the M193 side by side with the M855 same plate.

M193 bulged the back just a little, but stopped short at about .75 penetration.
I guess it just sprayed out of the hole, I scratched the back with my knife, it was unquestionably steel not compacted lead.

@ Gary, I really like the X-Tac. I will take it anyday over surplus 855. I am a huge fan of PMC. That was a steal.

I have a funny feeling the "armor piercing" ammo "high capacity magazines" and "gunshow loophole" will be the hard hitting points we feel the blunt end of.

I hope oneday that I will be able to walk into my LGS and buy green tipped 5.56, but we need to stay vigilant on standing our ground.
