Prepare yourself for a slew of varied answers...
My preference is Federal 180gr HST's in my G23

.40S&W defense/duty ammunition...
There are many solid choices for the .40S&W caliber. I'd lean towards the new Hornady Critical Duty 175gr load. It does very well in the FBI protocol T&Es & the Critical Duty line has a lot of + buzz from the shooting sports/firearms industry.
Other top .40 loads for carry or protection include the Winchester Ranger T(T Series), the Speer Gold Dot 165gr JHP, the Golden Saber 165gr JHP, DoubleTap Ammo's .40S&W line, Corbon's DPX & PowRball. Some .40 owners/LE owners like the heavy 180gr JHP loads but I prefer the 135-165gr mid-weight JHPs. What ever you pick, always use only FACTORY MADE rounds for carry or protection, no reloads or hand loads. Here are a few great online sources for ammuntion; www.shopcorbon.com www.doubletapammo.com www.cabelas.com www.natchezss.com www.sgammo.com . |

Currently I'm issued 165 grain and the guns seems to like it. I find the 180 grain Winchester and Speer loads have a little less recoil impulse and are easier to shoot quickly. I don't like 155 grain and below but that's my opinion, the gun doesn't seem to know the difference. I haven't compared different brands for accuracy but the speer seems more accurate from the informal shooting I've done.

I CCW a 3rd gen G23 and have found that the 180grn Speer Gold Dots produce a less snappy recoil than the 165grn Speer Gold Dots so that's been my carry ammo for 9 years.

165 gr HST's. If you like heavy the 180's are also great!

Gen4 G23 Review & Chrono Testing Link
Great gun you've picked up. Here's some real world chrono numbers from the G23: Winchester Ranger 135gr JHPs: 1124 fps, 379 ft/lbs energy Federal HST 180gr JHPs: 997 fps, 397 ft/lbs energy Federal HST 165gr JHPs: 1051 fps, 405 ft/lbs energy Federal HST & Gold Dots in either 180 or 165gr are my personal choices for defensive ammo.

Are you asking about carry ammo or range ammo? For range ammo, I shoot whatever brass cased FMJ I can find cheap. I carry Speer Gold Dot 165gr. I have a Gen3 G23.

We are issued Federal HST 180 grain. All the state agencies get this stuff here. It has been shown to be very effective in multiple real world usages. Real effective for a handgun anyway.

I've been carrying 180-grain rounds for about 3 years, Federal HSTs and Speer Gold Dots. Both outstanding designs.
Recently, having read some issues about bullet setback possibly creating dangerous pressure levels in .40 S&W guns, I have decided that when I swap I'll be going with 165-grainers. While I think Winchester Ranger T-Series, Remington Golden Saber, Federal HST, and Speer Gold Dot are all excellent rounds, I prefer HST and Gold Dot because I have found ATK's quality control (ATK makes both of these) superior to other brands. While Hornady's Critical Duty is a very cool looking round, I've seen and heard of more issues with Hornady pistol ammo than any of the above mentioned rounds - squib rounds, loose primers, etc. The 165 and 180 weights in .40 S&W have well-documented histories of being very effective, and the 155 is no slouch either. The Gen 4 Glock 23 is an excellent platform for the .40 S&W, and arguably the best 4th-gen Glock. Good choice.
