Bought a Carcano yesterday (not the real name I know, but it seems to be the best understood)

Need some help in finding out what it really is.

36in long, marked YE 14XX with RE below it on the receiver. Stock also marked YE 14XX.
Bolt turned down and marked LD.
Metal butt plate with cleaning rod in it (present).
Stock cut for folding bayonet (not present).
Adj sites that fold foward into stock.
One barrel band.

I did some research but so much of it conflicted each other.

Any input would be great!

Thanks,

It sounds like a Model 1891 carbine, which is just about 36" long, with a 17.5 inch barrel. There should be a bracket for the bayonet at the end of the barrel.

Some of these were converted to 7.35mm but they were originally in 6.5. "RE" means Regio Esercito, or Royal Army.

These are interesting rifles and can be bought at reasonable prices, but ammo is hard to find. Norma did make the 6.5, but the 7.35 is very hard to find, and no good bullets are available for reloading (it is .29 caliber). A 6 round, "en-bloc" clip (which enters the magazine) is required to use the gun as a repeater. These are a bit scarce, but they turn up at gun shows.

The Carcano is generally not a good candidate for conversion to any other caliber.

Jim,
Thanks for the feedback. I bought it just to add to the collection of WWII stuff. No plans on converting it to anything, there are tons of those out there already sadly.

I have some ammo and clips for it just for show, too expensive for me to play with!

Thanks,
