Since you said "mainly" home use, I'm guessing there is a possibility of some field use too. The Mossberg Model 500 Field / Security Combo, comes with both an 18.5" home and a 28" field barrel and has all wood furniture. Any dealer in your area should be able to order it for you for $350 out the door (most dealers use Davidsons as a supplier). Mossberg 500s are made in Connecticut.

I'd also go along with the Mossberg 500 idea.
Not sure if you can even get a good double barrel for $400 or less. Stoeger makes some coach guns around that price, but I don't know if they're any good and they are made in Turkey I believe. |

Benelli supernova or weatherby pa-08. Neither are made here, but both are solid.

Those may be decent guns, but they don't really fit the specified criteria. You won't find a Supernova with wood furnishings, and the Weatherby is made in Turkey. |

The Stoeger double barrel is 100% all American made.
Comes in 12,16,20,28, or 410. Very attractively price. Excellent reputation, the Cowboy shooters all use it more than any other double. As for me, only modern shotgun I shoot is an Ithaca 37 pump, but they are $500 and are made in Ohio. Its now been 75 years the same model has been made. Somebody must like them. I do. Because they are very light, easy to maneuver, and both the safety and slide release are where they should be for quick action. Which could be important when used indoors. "The Stoeger double barrel is 100% all American made"
I'm pretty sure they are made in Turkey or Brazil. |

Get a used Remington Wingmaster or a Stevens 311 and never look back. Both 100% American made, both dead reliable. For true home defense you don't need a tactical shotgun.
Add a Mossberg 500 to that list, too. |

While the Mossberg 500 is a fine shotgun, I am going to suggest a Remington 870. You can find an older Express, the ones with aluminum trigger assemblies for about $250-$275. These shotguns have tons of accessories available to include short HD barrels that can be found for under $100 at times.

i have said it before many many times. if you have a m500 thats all you need.
mine sits here by my bed 18 inch barrel with a phoenix technology recoil reducing stock system..in under 15 minutes i can change stock and barrel i do have the longer barrel and the beautifully factory wood stock so i feel i have 2 guns for the price of one.so the BEST advice is spend the money on your 500 and not wrap up your money into an other gun...you can only use one at a time |

I put an 18 inch barrel on my 500 and couldn't be happier. Get a barrel, i think i paid like 135 for mine. its a win-win. Youre familiar with the weapon and its dirt cheap.
