You leave your magazines at home.

Or

You become a felon.

Next question?

Use 10 round mags for the trip. If you need more than 10 shots you are in deep trouble.

Know ahead of time, first of all.

Secondly, if it's a state with 10-round mag limits, get some 10-rounders for your particular gun.

Or, bring a revolver as mentioned or a lower-capacity semi.

ny (for now) has ten round max on magazines
but does not allow for any one that does not have a
ny state permit

no non res permits for anyone

so, you would have to be traveling from a state where you
start off as legal and end up in a state that you are legal
and NOT stop in ny excepting maybe for gasoline

no restaurant no motel no nothing

i am not a lawyer so you would be best to check your
legal resources before you go out of your state

(handgunlaw.us is very good...there are others
usacarry.com is also good, but they are not lawyers either)

I carry per the LEOSA which exempts me from (most) state laws, including magazine capacity, type of bullets, etc.

BUT doesn't exempt me from delays and harassment while some un-informed person has to research the law.

All know I can carry, but not all know what mags & ammo I can carry.

Simple solution, I carry a 642 and LSWC (non-hollow point) bullets.....no hassle, no headaches.

I don't have to worry about researching each state's law before I cross the state line.

Seriously, it would be a good idea to have some 10-round mags and know the laws of the states through which you travel. For instance, I know that I have to inform an officer about my car gun if I get stopped in NC or SC. Fortunately, I don't have to inform in Va.

here ya go:

http://www.cjrpc.com/interstate_1.htm

when your done reading this you will be better informed than a lot of highway patrol and state police you may encounter

kraigwy makes a great point - even if your complying with the law you may have your trip delayed in a way you dont want it to be.

why push the issue?? unless you like playing dimestore attorney with the local magistrate or police supervisor.

common sense says don't take a chance and leave your high caps at home.

if your really really really worried about getting into a sustained gunfight then get a few ten round mags and go practice your mag changes

Hence the option to leave it at home.

But in all seriousness, tourists and vacationers are targets. If I can carry, I will carry. If I can't carry, I'll seriously consider whether I really need to go, and whether there are other options in locations that support my right to defend myself and my family. Unfortunately, my family lives in Washington State, and they do not recognize my permit...and there's are no real alternatives to visiting them.

I prefer to take one or two with me.

If transiting or visiting states with magazine capacity restrictions, I can go with lower capacity autos, or revolvers.

I don't have any 10rd mags for hi-cap pistols, as I find the size of the hi-cap pistols unnecessary if I can't use hi-cap magazines.

The only full-size, low-cap auto I would take would be a 1911.

My other 10 or less capacity autos include P7 and PPS, so if I am limited to 10, I might as well go 8+1 and have something that is easy enough to shoot, and very easy to conceal.

Travel ?s, websites.....

If a gun owner or concealed license holder travels often or has a lot of legal ?s, I suggest these sites; www.gunlawguide.com or www.handgunlaw.us . David Wong, a WA lawyer put out a travel guide to gun & knife laws too.
Be aware of the use of force & gun laws where you visit or travel. Some states or cities may have strict laws.
And no, not all cops or troopers you may meet will be "understanding" or let you go. This goes for off duty sworn LE or military members too.
I worked with a sworn patrol deputy who took a family trip. On his return he told our security group how he was pulled over 3 different times!

Buy a 10 round mag. You'll be legal and rest easy at the same time.

And legal or not, I wouldn't mess with attempting to plug the mag. That just seems like it might effect the reliability of a perfectly fine mag.

That would depend on the exact language of the state's statute, and the method used to plug it. Most jurisdictions with magazine capacity limits require that the mags not be capable of being converted to larger capacity. Thus, "plugs" would have to be solid and permanent.

The 10-round magazines that came with Para-Ordnance pistols during the Federal AWB (and I suppose what is still shipped to California and New York) were totally different from the standard capacity mags, having a tall, solid polymer base to which the 10-round steel body was attached. The height of the solid base varied depending on whether the pistol was a P10, P12, P13 or P14. The mag body itself didn't change.

Aftermarket Para mags had a dimple in each side and a score mark all around that cut almost all the way through the metal. The score didn't touch the dimpled sections, which held the mag together and stopped the follower from dropping lower than 10 rounds of capacity. Drill out the dimples, and the first time you loaded 10 rounds the mag body would snap along the score line.

I will use some Navy Aviator lingo here.

10 round magazines, or go Revolver equipped.

My commonly carried pistols have 6, 7, 8, 9 or 10-rd magazines. For the one "hi-cap" pistol I own (which uses 12-rd magazines) I also have a good supply of 10-rd magazines for it. (Only 2 rounds difference, anyway.)

Mostly when I travel by car I'm carrying either a 5-shot J-frame and/or a small pistol chambered in 9/.40 that uses 8, 9 or 10 round magazines. I suppose I might sometimes include my LCP with its 6-rd magazines now, too.

Why complicate things?

Take the magazine out, and leave one in the chamber. Make sure your first shot's a good one.

Why does everyone seem to think they are going to get pulled over, stripped searched by the side of the road, and have their car searched by a dog sniffing for ammo?
I am not saying to break the law, but be realistic. If you drive the limit, aren't drinking and generally behave as you traverse, let your conscience be your guide
